Title: Director of Upward Bound, Grant Funded Program

Location: St. John’s University, NY (Queens Campus)

 

Program Description:

Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO grant focused on helping students to overcome class, social, academic, and opportunity gaps to higher education.  TRIO programs provide a variety of educational support services that include assistance in choosing a college; tutoring; personal and financial counseling; career counseling; assistance in applying to college; workplace and college visits; special instruction in reading, writing, study skills, and mathematics; assistance in applying for financial aid; and academic assistance in high school.  The current five-year grant ends August 31, 2027.  There may be regularly scheduled weekend and evening activities.  

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the short and long-term strategic planning, implementation, administration, and evaluation of the Upward Bound Program.
  • Manage daily operations and budget administration of the Upward Bound Program.
  • Recruitment and supervision of staff and provide professional development activities.
  • Develop strong working relationships with the administration, counselors, teachers, and students at sponsored high school to provide continuous oversight and feedback for the implementation of Upward Bound academic initiatives.
  • Provide counseling services and support for students and coordinate parent engagement.
  • Plan all support services delivery and activities for students and their families.
  • Serve as primary liaison with community-based partners.
  • Monitor students’ academic progress with program coordinators and school personnel.
  • Attend national, state, and local conferences and trainings.
  • Track statistics and gather data, to prepare monthly and annual institutional and federal reports including annual performance report.

 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, education, psychology, social work or other relevant discipline;
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in designing, managing, and implementing student centered programs for disadvantaged student populations in a secondary or higher education setting;
  • Program evaluation and assessment experience, as well as using data to help guide future programming decisions.
  • Understanding of students’ social emotional learning (SEL) needs, and ability to help motivate students to succeed;
  • Extensive experience managing teams that include student workers and professionals with a focus on staff personal/professional development 
  • Skilled in navigating relationships with multiple stakeholders within complex environments
  • Experience in managing budgets and completing annual performance reports;
  • Experience in academic advising, tutoring, counseling, teaching, and student  affairs;
  • Knowledge of college admission processes and financial aid policies and regulations;
  • Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills;
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.

 

 

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual/hourly salary range for this position is $85,000 - $95,000.  St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.   

 

 

This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
