POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE:Director of Secondary Education/Lead Director of Science (anticipated to be effective August 1, 2024)
FLSA: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent for Instruction
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve Month Contract
SUPERVISES: Secondary Administrators/Secondary Program, Science Lead
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Hold a Master's Degree and endorsed in Virginia with a Postgraduate Professional License in Administration/Supervision, Pre-kindergarten (PreK)-12
- A minimum of six (6) years of experience as an educator is required, including a minimum of three (3) years as a building administrator and three (3) years as a teacher
- Must possess proper written and oral communication skills
- Must have the ability to work effectively with school personnel, students, and parents
- Must have effective leadership skills
- Must have a demonstrated knowledge of school curriculum and administration
- Must have at least three years of successful classroom teaching experience
PREFERRED:
- Possess a Bachelor of Science Degree in Science
- Have at least three years of teaching experience in science
FOCUS:
- To ensure that every student graduates and that every graduate is prepared for successful entry into and participation in college or career.
- To provide strong leadership and mentorship for high schools (grades 9-12) by pursuing a vision for sound instructional programs and services that are educationally progressive and research-based.
- To direct, monitor, and promote the Division's instructional programs at the secondary level and facilitate the ongoing development and alignment of the Division's secondary programs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Serve as leader and general resource person in matters relating to curriculum development and evaluation
- Provide vision, direction, management, and oversight for all aspects of the secondary program including goals, budgets, curriculum, student assessment, program evaluation, data collection and analysis, school improvement plans, and compliance
- Facilitate, implement, and assist with the development of a standards-based curriculum in all content areas in grades 9-12
- Coordinate and implement the staff development program for grades 9-12
- Coordinate the secondary instructional programs in a manner consistent with Division goals and objectives
- Analyze reports, interpret student performance data, and make recommendations for instructional improvement
- Interpret and communicate the secondary curriculum, its philosophy, goals, and objectives to the School Board, the administration, staff, and the general public
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Review, research, prepare, and disseminate information pertaining to trends in curriculum development, extended learning programs, and intervention programs
- Develop processes and timelines for the implementation of standards-based accountability to reflect legislative and State directives
- Facilitate the development of the content of grades 9-12 multiple assessments to align with the Division's approved curriculum and Virginia Standards of Learning
- Develop, submit, and monitor budget for the operation of Project Graduation
- Direct, coordinate, and/or assist with summer school, the Academy of Engineering and Technology (AET), and the Regional Governor's School for Mathematics, Science and Technology (PGSMST)
- Select and supervise staff to implement the Virginia Early Warning Signs (VEWS) for the secondary schools
- Coordinate the process of textbook evaluation, selection, and adoption for science
- Coordinate and work with secondary principals in the ongoing evaluation of curriculum and instruction at the secondary level to improve student achievement
- Direct, coordinate, and/or assist with the planning and supervision of all high school graduations
- Provide Division liaison services on matters pertaining to secondary, and science education
- Effectively handle parent complaints for the secondary level
- Manage the Virtual Virginia Program which includes ordering and distribution of textbooks and implementing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) reimbursement process for all secondary schools
- Visit secondary schools regularly to ensure effective communication
- Supervise and evaluate assigned certified personnel
- Provide timely and effective communication regarding incidents and/or situations that might impact the Division to appropriate personnel
- Coordinate dual enrollment courses for core curricula with Danville Community College
- Maintain and cultivate the external and internal image of the Division and schools
- Engage in program-related outreach to partners in the community, in business, and in higher education to facilitate students' successful transition into post-secondary institutions and careers
- Provide direction and oversight for alternative programs, athletics, and extracurricular activities
- Work in tandem with the Director of Elementary Education and Director of Middle School Education to ensure the Kindergarten (K)-12 articulation of curriculum and academic expectations to drive Division-wide instructional improvements in a coherent manner
- Direct and coordinate the selection of candidates to represent the Division for the Granville Meade and Lee-Jackson Scholarships
- Serve as a member of the Virginia Tiered Systems of Support (VTSS) Division Council, Behavioral Task Force Committee, Concussion Management Team, Grading and Reporting Task Force, Bullying Prevention Committee, and the Division Calendar Committee
- Carry out all other duties as assigned by the Division Superintendent or designee
