Job Summary

The Director of Research IT Services and Support leads the implementation and maintenance of Information Resources infrastructure and services dedicated to the evolving computational and IT needs of UT Southwestern's research community. This includes the recruitment and supervision of a team of IT professionals with the technical expertise necessary to maintain cutting edge infrastructure in a fluid climate of user demands and technical solutions.  This team will function as part of the broader Research as a Service (Raas) initiative of Information Resources. The Director will report to Senior IR Leadership and provide updates and take direction from the Steering Committee of the BioHPC, which includes the CIO and other academic leaders.

 

Job Duties

In close daily collaboration and consultation with the BioHPC and IR teams, this position:

  1. Oversees the day-to-day activities of the RaaS Team
  2. Serves as liaison to the BioHPC team and BioHPC Steering Committee with IR teams and central administration, including but not limited to participation in BioHPC's daily team meetings; implementing change management in the communication between all relevant RaaS teams; streamlining collaborative processes between Information Resources and BioHPC in terms of procurement planning, remediation planning of older systems, and disaster recovery planning.
  3. Liaise with researchers, centers, and labs across the UT Southwestern Enterprise to identify needs and strategize on how Information Resources might assist in their ongoing research activities. Work to implement these strategies.
  4. Participates in short- and long-term planning of research-centric networking and computing environments that meet the demands of state-of-the-art HPC and HCC infrastructures.
  5. Ensures success in the day-to-day operations of the primary campus Linux-based HPC research environment consisting of hundreds of physical servers, thousands of cores, and flash/disk storage interconnected by high-speed networking.
  6. Work to understand and ensures success in the IT operations of non-Bio HPC research environments as requested and as available. 
  7. Oversees and participates in operational activities, such as installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of general HPC environment and software issues.
  8. Manages HPC-cluster-based and network-based security enforcement in accordance with university policy, best practices, and applicable compliance regulations.
  9. Monitors for and leads resolution and/or escalation of emerging, detected, and reported technical performance and functionality issues.
  10. Oversees and facilitates contracting, procurement and asset management for BioHPC hardware and software including installation, service/support, and decommissioning, per request of BioHPC team for specific hardware design and in collaboration with all relevant IR teams.
  11. Leads Information Resources (IR) side of HPC related projects such as process documentation, service enhancement, equipment updates, integration of licensing and agreements, information security compliance, etc.
  12. Contributes to strategy for building HPC infrastructure that can be accessed securely for different data types (incl. PHI clinical data) and advises BioHPC team with regard to HIPAA security rule and proper computing environment.
  13. Contributes to capital planning and annual budget process for BioHPC hardware and associated costs.
  14. Leads internal education/training program between BioHPC Team and Information Resources teams.
  15. Recruits and supervises Research IT team.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience and Education

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field and ten (10) years of progressively responsible related experience, to include at least three (3) years in a supervisory/managerial role. Experience leading technical application development and implementation projects in an academic research or healthcare environment preferred. Additional years of directly related work experience may be considered on a year for year basis in lieu of stated education requirements
