Literacy is a social justice issue. 65% of fourth grade students in our country weren’t reading on grade level prior to the pandemic; even more devastating is the fact that 82% of low-income students aren’t reading on grade level. Reading is the operating system of a school; if kids can’t read, they can’t learn. Ignite is changing this, envisioning a world in which all kids leave first grade on-level, independent readers.
Ignite! Reading teaches kids to read by providing 15 minutes of daily, virtual, 1:1 reading instruction with a highly trained tutor. Our program gets results fast, accelerating reading progress and closing critical gaps in order to ensure that all kids have the chance to be successful in literacy, school, and life.
Ignite’s first school program launched last fall and one year later we have grown our number of schools and students 18x. Our program is scaling quickly and we’re seeking a diverse team of talented, mission-driven individuals. Your Role
Reporting to the SVP of Tutor Operations and Experience, the Director of Tutor Learning and Development is a key member of the Tutor Operations and Experience team that is charged with recruiting, developing, training and retaining 6,000 tutors in the next 36 months. The Director of Learning & Development will develop training programs to enable our tutors to become highly skilled reading specialists who are able to ensure every Ignite student becomes a proficient, confident, lifelong reader.
At Ignite! Reading, you will:
- Develop, launch, and effectively manage our Science of Reading certification course for thousands of new and seasoned online tutors allowing them to become highly effective online reading specialists and deliver 1:1 literacy instruction rooted in the Science of Reading
- Develop tutoring practicum experiences/courses in the Science of Reading with university partners and their schools of Education
- Build processes for surfacing critical training topics that will help tutors successfully engage kids, deliver impactful instruction, and navigate challenges that arise while tutoring
- Create online courses and certification programs that address skills gaps among members of our active tutoring corps
- Research and help select a Learning Management System (LMS) with the features and functionality needed for Ignite to deliver world-class online training and certification courses
- Establish KPIs and reporting tools for measuring training effectiveness
- Create innovative incentives and methods for ensuring tutors complete certifications
- Hire, train and manage a team of literacy coaches who will deliver training
- Engage and manage instructional design consultants who will help refine and elevate Ignite’s online certification and training programs
- Ensure training communications and presentation styles align with Ignite’s values, culture and commitment to providing all kids with rigorous, engaging and high quality instruction
- Contribute to the development and implementation of Ignite’s community platform for active tutors
- Work with the Ignite! Reading Tutor Operations and Experience team to create a seamless onboarding experience for new tutors

- You have 5+ years of experience in a Learning & Development role, or similar
- You have a track record of building scalable programs that deliver on key business needs
