Job description

Principal Scientist (Director): Head Spatial Sciences, Advanced Translational Programs, Translational Medicine, Early Oncology

Do you have expertise and a passion for translating basic research into patient treatments? Would you like to apply your expertise to improve cancer therapies in a company that follows the science and turns ideas into life changing medicines? Can you work with multiple groups in a matrix environment to develop the next generation of cancer immunotherapies?

Then AstraZeneca might be the place for you! Work with leaders in Immuno-Oncology and Cancer biology with a track record of making immunotherapies happen and improved patient outcomes a reality. Here at AstraZeneca, you’ll have the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives every day.

We offer a broad range of therapeutics with a unique and strong collaborative network as part of the AstraZeneca family. AstraZeneca has a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. We attract top minds, and we nurture and build top talent. As Principal Scientist in Advanced Translational Programs, you’ll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients’ lives.

We are seeking a highly innovative and motivated scientific leader to join the Advanced Translational Programs group as a Principal Scientist (Associate Director/Director)

You will drive our expanding emphasis on spatial biology using platforms such as digital pathology, image analysis, and machine learning in oncology. This position will have a shared focus on enabling the digital transformation of our pathology strategies, through interfacing with key informatics and data management stakeholders as well as leading projects generating digital pathology and multimodal data in collaboration with pathologists and computer scientists within the department and across the organization.

The candidate will bring additional informatics and digital pathology expertise our department, have an interest in working within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment (including bioinformatics, image acquisition and analysis, as well as oncology, immunology, and biomarker development), and can forge strong links with individual contributors and cross-functional teams. Opportunities exist for outstanding scientific candidates to advance AstraZeneca’s drug discovery and development programs through independent research, supported by a team of basic, translational and clinical researchers

The Advanced Translational Programs is embedded within Early Oncology and works in close collaboration with Research Pathology, Computational Pathology, Genomics, Proteomics, and Bioinformatics to ensure that strategies for the treatment and cure of disease are based on accurate analyses of oncology mechanisms.

The Department pathologists collaborate with and provide expert pathology support to research scientists in the discovery, characterization, and preclinical and clinical development of novel therapeutic products for a variety of human diseases. The scientist support effort includes participation on teams devoted to the development of predictive and prognostic markers in many of these diseases. At AstraZeneca, our scientists have access to cutting edge equipment and techniques, and pathology core laboratory facilities and personnel.

Qualifications

  • You have a PhD, MD, DVM, DO or dual degree. A demonstrable track record and/or primary interest in conducting Spatial-based research is required.
  • You have advanced training in Spatial, Medical or Pathology Informatics, potentially including a Fellowship, Ph.D. degree in a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • You are passionate about collaborative, at-scale digital spatial pathology projects, potentially including digital transformation of pathology reporting, whole slide image scanning and data management, or digital pathology image analysis algorithm development.
  • You have demonstrated understanding of the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning or deep learning in the digital pathology, imaging, or computer vision field.
  • You are self-motivated and can distill complex issues and clearly articulate innovative solutions in a team environment.
  • You have excellent scientific communication skills: verbally and in writing; in informal 1-1 settings, team meetings, and formal seminars. Effective communication is essential and includes presentations at cross-functional teams, internal review committees, and external conferences, in addition to writing reports and collaborative scientific publication.
  • You have demonstrated learning agility, adaptability, collaborative skills, strong influencing skills and delivering results through teamwork.
  • You have a strong desire to contribute to our mission of translating basic science and expertise into meaningful, long-lasting benefit for patients.
