FORT BRAGG UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
JOB DESCRIPTION - INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT, SEVERELY HANDICAPPED  (Special Education)
                                                                                                                                                                                                                              DEFINITION
To assist credentialed personnel, helping in education-related activities and with routine clerical duties in a classroom or other setting for severely handicapped students requiring special services.
Performs other duties as assigned.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                          SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Received general supervision from a principal and technical and functional supervision from a teacher or other credentialed personnel.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - May include, but are not limited to, the following:
 Assists in developing daily schedules for service of students.
 Works with small groups of students in learning activities, assisting individuals as needed.
 Leads supervise or participate in planned physical education activities with groups of students.
 Uses appropriate behavior management techniques.
 Works with students on the playground, in the cafeteria and in the bus area.
 Secures and projects audio-visual aids.
 Assists in the development and production of instructional materials.
 Collects and distributes instructional materials.
 Participates in planning, developing and implementing programs of individualized instruction for each student.
 Consults with staff on student progress and behavior.
 Attends required in-service training sessions or workshops.
 Assists students with physical disabilities and attends to their physical needs as necessary.
 Performs duties, which require lifting, stooping and bending.
 Assists students working on individualized programs in speech development, physical and orthopedic training, vision, orientation/mobility, behavior,  personal needs, vocational training, and cognitive and emotional skills.
 Assists with the data collection and evaluation of student skills and progress.
 Assists students with the development of self-help skills such as toilet training, eating, grooming, shopping, etc.
 Makes community visits with students, sometimes independently, as required in the I.E.P.
 Assists students in general education inclusion activities.
 Adapts and modifies curriculum.
 Transports students as necessary.
 Operates, instructs and assists students in the use of appliances and equipment used in vocational education programs.
 Records pertinent information and maintains student files.
 Performs clerical tasks and operates office equipment.
 Administers various medical procedures to students after receiving proper instruction when necessary.
 Implements individual behavior support plans when working with students requiring them.
 Performs related duties as assigned
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 High School diploma or equivalent
 Successful completion of the Fort Bragg Unified School District proficiency test consistent with E.C. Section 45344.5
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Knowledge of:
 Basic methods of instruction, including adapting/modifying curriculum.
 Specialized needs of severely handicapped students, including physical, emotional and behavioral
 Behavior modification techniques
 Specialized techniques per mandatory training
 First Aid and safety practices, including universal precautions
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Ability to:                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Direct the activities of and supervise students
 Follow written and oral instructions
 Assist in the physical care of students
 Work with severely handicapped students
 Maintain confidence and trust of students
 Assess student needs and progress and explain to those concerned with student development
 Work independently
 Understand and carry out directions
 Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
 Learn to operate computers, specialized audio-visual, and other school equipment
 Maintain confidentiality
 Work and communicate effectively with students, teachers and other staff members
 Learn required medical procedures
 Help with toileting, and safe clean up of excrement and other bodily discharge
 Obtain CPR and First Aid training and certification

Any combination of experience and training, which would indicate possession of the above skills and abilities.
Special Requirements
Some positions in this class may require possession of a valid California driver's license.
Physical Requirements
 Ability to exert 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
 Ability to stoop, climb, stand for long periods of time and perform physical labor, physical mobility and stamina to participate in activities which may be strenuous.    Ability to run after a child.
