Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
  • Deputy Fire Marshal I
    • Two (2) years full-time paid experience in firefighting and/or fire prevention with a municipality or other government fire agency, or equivalent experience.
  • Deputy Fire Marshal II
    • Four (4) years full-time paid experience in firefighting and/or fire prevention with a municipality or other government fire agency, or equivalent experience.
    • Bachelor degree in Fire Science or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
    • Associate degree in Fire Science or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
  • Deputy Fire Marshal III
    • Four (4) years of full-time paid experience in firefighting and/or fire prevention, fire and life safety plans review, fire suppression and detection systems plan review, or equivalent experience.
    • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
    • Associate degree in Fire Science or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for one (1) year of experience.

Additional Eligibility Requirements:
  • Possession of ICC Fire Inspector I certification within nine (9) months of hire date.
  • Successful passing of the DPSST NFPA Fire Investigator exam within 12 months of hire date.
  • Possession of valid driver's license by date of hire. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver's license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).
  • Ability to maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.

Available Schedule:

  • 4-10 (four 10-hour days with three days off each week)

Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Inspects a variety of regulated occupancies for conformance to applicable fire and safety codes.
  • Performs plan review and associated inspections of site development and fire protection systems for compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and standards.
  • Consults with responsible parties concerning code violations, alternatives, and remedies.
  • Makes necessary contacts with developers, property owners, architects, engineers, and contractors to determine code compliance, permit requirements, etc.
  • Issues operational and construction fire code permits and conducts associated with inspections.
  • Prepares written correspondence including letters, inspection reports, detailed documentation of fire investigations, etc.
  • Testifies in criminal and civil trials and acts as Subject Matter Expert in related topics.
  • Prepares and presents classes and demonstrations to citizens, businesses, and school groups.
  • Conducts wildfire mitigation home evaluations.
  • Prepares and disseminates information to the media.
  • Provides Fire Department Operations Division with technical support and training.
  • Provides assistance to the general public and other staff members regarding code compliance, permit requirements, and other related information.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Fire Chief.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:
This position requires inside, office desk work that includes exposure to regular office noise and distractions, adequate lighting, and regulated HVAC systems in relation to temperature. This environment also includes interactions with the public as well as outside environmental exposures such as hot and cold temperatures and hazards of home and industrial business settings. Driving to and from locations will be required as needed.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the essential job functions, satisfactorily. This position involves extended periods of sitting and standing, with occasional walking, crouching, bending, stooping, twisting, turning, and balancing. This position may require carrying or lifting no more than 49 pounds at one time, or 50-100 pounds with help. The employee is regularly required to operate a variety of automated office machines which include a computer, printer, copy machine, calculator, telephone, etc. This position requires walking areas such as catwalks, roofs, basements, etc. and exposures to post fire hazards that may be present during investigation.
