Job Summary: This position is responsible for the accurate and timely coding and abstracting of specific diagnostic and procedural medical record data for continuing health care, health statistics, research and reimbursement. Focus is on inpatient and Same Day Surgery coding. Produces Meditech and State reports as required/requested. Serves as a third Payroll backup for the Director.
Essential Responsibilities:
Reviews, analyzes and codes medical record diagnostic/procedural data on a timely basis using up-to-date knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 Classification systems and guidelines as well as ICD-10-CM/PCS systems and guidelines starting October 2015.
Assigns MS-DRGs/APR-DRGs/AP-DRGs through abstracting in 3M software.
Finalizes abstracts in a timely manner for proper reimbursement practice.
Remains knowledgeable and up to date on all coding and reimbursement system changes to assure appropriate coding and billing practices.
Monitors Meditech reports to support goal of $500K outstanding billing limit (t-5 days from discharge) and reports overages to Director.
Required Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED required. Associate's degree preferred.
License Registered Health Info Tech preferred., and Registration Certified Coding Specialist preferred.
0-1 years related work experience required in coding (up-to-date knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 guidelines) in an acute care environment or completion of the BIDMC Coding Training program required..
Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Preferred Qualifications:
Six months to one year of computer experience in 3M and Meditech.
Knowledge and experience with Medicare reimbursement systems.
