Why It's a Great Opportunity:
In this position you will perform professional level work in the legal field as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the Civil Division of the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney's Office representing individuals or agencies petitioning for civil commitment or detention and defend all challenges to such commitment or detention.

You will work with petitioners at civil commitment hearings before Superior Court Commissioners, this includes defending motions for revision before Superior Court Judges and trial in Superior Court. You will also prepare briefs and appear in the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

You will work with the senior level attorneys, County Executive, legislative, and other agencies and branches of county government to develop proposed legislation that the county wishes to present to the state legislature.

How to be Successful in this Role:
We are looking for an attorney who feels comfortable in the courtroom and advocating on behalf of a client. You will perform duties with professional discretion and within office guidelines, professional ethics and standards, and legal requirements. The ability to handle high volume caseload, work under pressure with tight timelines is essential and the ability to collaborate with clients and colleagues in a collaborative work environment.

Your Future in this Role:
This is a great entry level opportunity to directly on a team with senior level attorneys, participate in making Pierce County a great place to live, work, and raise a family; to serve the citizens of Pierce County to ensure that individuals experiencing a mental health crisis get the help they need. You will also serve as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney of the state's second largest county.

Core Daily Responsibilities and Requirements:
The attorney will work closely with petitioners or agencies petitioning for civil commitment. This requires an understanding of civil commitment law and the intersection of criminal law with civil commitment law, along with:

  • Experience in courtroom advocacy
  • Demonstrated legal advocacy skills, both written and oral
  • Mastery civil/criminal rules, and rules of evidence
  • Strict adherence to the Rules of Professional Conduct
  • The ability to manage multiple cases and projects simultaneously
  • A commitment to equity diversity and inclusion
  • A good sense of humor and a positive and supportive workplace demeanor
Minimum Requirements:
Three or more years of experience in the practice of law in a relevant area of law. Membership in the Washington State Bar Association.

Preferred:
  • Preference will be given to attorneys with specialized experience.
  • Relevant experience as a licensed attorney advising public or private sector clients.
  • Relevant experience initiating and responding to frequent motions and attending multiple hearings and occasional trials.
