The Sheriff's Office is seeking a Correctional Sergeant to join their team. Under the supervision of the Correctional Lieutenant, Correctional Sergeants supervise Correctional Officers, Correctional Technicians and other staff on an assigned shift. They may be responsible for supervision and control of inmate commissary and welfare fund, Food Services and Inmate Work Release Program.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.
  1. Supervises enforcement of facility policies and procedures, maintenance of inmate discipline, and maintenance of a secure and peaceful environment in the facility.
  2. Supervises, coordinates, directs and evaluates assigned staff, to include assigning work, handling employee concerns and problems, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals; plans, directs and conducts training of assigned staff.
  3. Assists the Correctional Lieutenant in preparing work schedules and assignments of personnel.
  4. Reviews, approves and regulates compensatory time off, vacations, and relief and overtime personnel assigned to the Jail Division.
  5. Assists in observing and monitoring inmate activities in the facility on a continual basis.
  6. Processes booking of inmates in/out of facility; completes applicable forms; secures personal property; makes photographic and fingerprinting records of incoming arrested prisoners.
  7. Ensures the general health, welfare, security and safety of inmates; supervises provision of services involving housing, meals, commissary, mail, visitation, telephone, and medical needs.
  8. Transports inmates to/from courts, state institutions, other jails, hospitals or elsewhere as needed; escorts inmates within facility.
  9. Supervises facility security; searches inmates, mail, cells, or other jail facilities to locate/remove contraband; checks locks, alarms, and other security devices; assists with conducting searches for escapees.
  10. Assists officers in restraining violent/unruly arrested prisoners.
  11. Acts as Inmate Disciplinary Review Officer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: Jail procedures, rules and regulations; local, state and federal laws applicable to detention facilities; rules and regulations governing the handling of inmates in detention; security procedures; occupational hazards and safety techniques; safety/health rules and regulations; principles of supervision and training; basic mathematics; specialized security and law enforcement equipment and tools; standard office equipment; and basic computer applications and techniques.
Ability to: Supervise an assigned shift of Correctional Officers, Correctional Technicians and other assigned staff; restrain individuals without causing physical harm; establish and maintain effective working relationships with prisoners, jail staff, other department staff, and members of the public; determine the appropriate course of action in emergency or stressful situations; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; prepare and maintain records; operate specialized security and law enforcement equipment and tools; operate standard office equipment; operate a motor vehicle; utilize various computer software programs relevant to the position.
Education and Experience: Must possess a minimum of sixty (60) semester units or fifteen (15) core units in law enforcement or related field. Must have three years of full-time law experience in a correctional facility. Must possess an S.T.C. Jail Operations Certificate, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
NOTE: One year of additional experience may be substituted for fifteen (15) college units.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; effectively deal with personal danger; maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities including subduing resisting individuals, chasing fleeing subjects, running, crouching or crawling during emergency operations, moving equipment and injured/deceased persons, climbing stairs/ladders, performing life-saving and rescue procedures; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as data entry; maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observation and communicating with others.
Shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state or any other state or in any federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any other state or in any federal jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in this state, pursuant to Government Code, Section 1029; shall have a good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation pursuant to Government Code Section 1031; shall be a citizen of the State of California pursuant to Government Code 24103. Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
License or Certificate: Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.
