About the Department:
Housing & Residence Life (HRL) is an auxiliary organization within the University Life unit of George Mason University. HRL employs over 170 full-time and graduate staff members and over 200 undergraduate student staff members. HRL oversees student housing areas comprised of roughly 6,000 beds within over forty (40) residential facilities, as well as housing the distributed campuses including the Science & Technology Campus and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation. About the Position:
The Coordinator of ResidenceLife for Residential Academic Engagement assists with the implementation and assessment of all residential learning communities and serves as a liaison for the faculty and staff who work with the individual residential learning communities. The Coordinator of ResidenceLife for Residential Academic Engagement is responsible for collaborating with academic partners to identify the needs of each Residential Learning Community (RLC) at Mason and to provide strategic guidance and support for RLC stakeholders in the execution and assessment of the RLC programs. In addition, the Coordinator of ResidenceLife for Residential Academic Engagement develops and implements a marketing strategy, recruitment, and assignments for the RLCs.
Responsibilities:
Residential Academic Initiatives:
  • Assist with the development and implementation of all Residential Learning Communities (RLCs);
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of the residential curriculum in collaboration with the Residential Student Development Initiatives (RSDI) team and other Residence Life staff;
  • Manage the residential tutoring program including recruitment, hiring, training, and supervising the residential tutors;
  • Oversee the use of early intervention tools and retention efforts;
  • Develop and support initiatives that recognize student academic success and that support student academic success skills; and
  • Supervise and evaluate as needed departmental graduate staff or interns for the Residential Academic Engagement (RAE) initiatives area.
Residential Learning Community Marketing, Occupancy and Assessment:
  • Implement marketing and recruitment efforts including creation and management of both print and electronic materials;
  • Manage regular communication with RLC stakeholders including the creation of a monthly RLC newsletter;
  • Work in collaboration with the Office or Admissions and other university offices to recruit new RLC students, including coordination of and attendance at Preview Days and Mason Orientation events;
  • Collect and track RLC programming using a program log;
  • Work with the supervisor on RLC linked courses, planning, and course collection for the Registrar;
  • Assist supervisor to evaluate and guide RLC partners on maintaining annual budgets per RLC;
  • Create and support methods to assess the achievement of residential learning community outcomes and student satisfaction; and
  • Support the implementation and evaluation of all department and university wide assessment strategies.
Residential Academic Engagement Partnerships and Collaborations:
  • Collaborate with Residential Learning Community partners and stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, deans, and directors;
  • Meet monthly with RLC partners and Residence Life staff;
  • Provide guidance and support to RLC partners in creating strategies and programming to meet the RLC and curriculum learning outcomes;
  • Support Community Directors in programming, curriculum implementation, RLC student staff support, and orientation;
  • Support the RLC student staff programming by ensuring that RLC student staff and RLC partners are conducting regular meetings as well as training and development;
  • Work with RLC partners and RLC RAs and requirements to live with the Residential Learning Communities; and
  • Assist supervisor in the creation of new partnerships to support academic student success including with Student Success Coaching, and other University Life offices.
Other Duties:
  • Assist in RLC assignment processes utilizing software in collaboration with other departments;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor;
  • Assist in fulfilling duties of vacant positions within the department, as relevant and needed;
  • Attend regularly scheduled departmental meetings;
  • Actively support and comply with all University policies, HRL (Housing & Residence Life) regulations, department vision and goals;
  • Act as essential personnel in times of emergency and at critical times;
  • This position is a live-in staff member; and
  • This position will serve in an on-call rotation as a part of the campus duty response team.
Required Qualifications:
  • A master's degree in a related field (e.g., Higher Education, Student Development, Counseling, etc.) or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Progressive experience (typically obtained in two years), including a variety of responsibilities, in Residence Life, student affairs and housing operations;
  • Demonstrated experience as a supervisor of student or professional staff;
  • Prior experience with Learning Communities that contribute to student engagement and retention;
  • Foundational knowledge of student development and have understanding of current trends in Residence Life and student housing;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrate the ability to be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of a diverse and dynamic environment;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to address student transitions and success;
  • Demonstrated effective skills in oral and written communications, interpersonal relationships, administrative/organizational skills, problem solving, creativity and critical thinking; and
  • Ability to work with a diverse student and staff population.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in higher education at a four-year institution;
  • Prior experience with Learning Communities that contribute to student engagement and retention; and
  • Experience implementing successful social media and marketing campaigns in conjunction with programming and office identity web-presence.
