The Computing Facilities department within the School of Computer Science is searching for a Computer Operator to join the team! This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in an exciting and challenging work environment. In this role you will be responsible for routine operating and monitoring of large installation computer and network equipment, including mainframe and distributed server systems.
Core responsibilities will include:
- Operates computers and computer-related equipment to complete work assignments, i.e., operates multiple control console, online terminals, laser and line printers and forms-handling equipment.
- Monitors control consoles for deviations from standard and to check status of operations. Detects job errors or equipment failure. Manipulates controls to rearrange job sequence to determine the point of equipment or program failure. For routine problems, takes appropriate corrective or preventative action; for non-routine problems, refers problem to Computer Operator II, supervisor or appropriate hardware, software, or data communications personnel.
- Performs file system backups and restorations. Labels incoming tapes. Enters transactions into on-line tape library system or other records.
- Logs events of shift included system malfunctions and disruptions, into logbook and crafts shift reports for supervisory review.
- May interact with system users, answering questions and responding to special requests. May assist in resolving operational problems with users, coordinating proposed solutions with supervisor, hardware, software, and data communications personnel.
- May be part of a 7-day per week/24-hour per day operation. Must be willing to work shifts, including weekends and holidays, and overtime, if necessary.
- May be required to work unsupervised and to supervise work of part-time operators.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Ability to pay close attention to detail; keep and maintain accurate and detailed reports and records.
- Ability to prioritize work and balance multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work with sensitive information, maintain confidentiality and use discretion.

Qualifications:
- Associates Degree in Computer Science; Vocational, Trade, or Technical Education in Computer Science
- 0-1 years of experience in Computer Repair or Operating System Administration
- A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
