Job description

Seeking Degree Programs In: Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering or a closely related field.

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a graduate student to contribute to a project on Silver (Ag) and Cesium (Cs) diffusion in Silicon Carbide (SiC) layers for TRi-structural ISOtropic (TRISO) particle fuel. Intern project responsibilities would include: Assisting to read EBSD data to identify different grain boundary (GB) types and develop an approach to attribute different diffusion coefficients to different GB types; quantify the effect of different GB diffusions on the effective diffusivity for Ag and Cs in SiC, based on texture, grain size, temperature, etc; contributing to a final report detailing the work accomplished during the internship, which will be used to complete the NEAMS achievement report on the improvement of Cs effective diffusivity in SiC layer.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Enrolled full time student status at an accredited college or university (undergraduate, graduate, PhD)
  • Possess a minimum overall 3.0 Grade Point Average

Preferred Skills:

Experience or knowledge with mesoscale modeling, Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE), and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) data.
