The mission of the Georgetown UniversityMemory Disorders Program (MDP) is to prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease and related dementias by conducting innovative research, educating and training healthcare professionals and the public on research advances, and offering state-of-the-art clinical care.
Job Overview
The Community Engagement Specialist employs strategies and networking expertise in the Washington, DC, metro area to meet and exceed the clinical research study recruitment goals of the GU MDP as part of the Alzheimer's Clinical Trial Consortium (ACTC).
They focus on identifying the needs of communities traditionally underrepresented in clinical research, use innovative approaches to educate, and promote Alzheimer's disease and related clinical research participation among these communities, and establish relationships with community partners to support the GU MDP's commitment to diversity and inclusion now and in the future.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Identify, build, and maintain relationships within communities currently underrepresented in Alzheimer's clinical research in the Washington, DC area
  • Meet remotely and in person with key community stakeholders and community members to assess needs and learn how GU MDP can best educate and support all communities to allow for clinical research participation
  • Develop programs and informational materials tailored to various communities, and coordinate and participate in community events, meetings and workshops
  • Organize recruitment efforts independently and simultaneously in many different communities Serve as the primary contact and liaison between the community and GU MDP - and between GU MDP and the ACTC Recruitment and Retention (RER) Unit - to share knowledge and feedback regarding study enrollment opportunities, barriers and long-term strategies for success
  • Attend weekly, monthly and annual meetings with the ACTC RER Unit, and participate in ACTC initiatives to share best practices around recruitment and retention of participants in ACTC clinical research
  • Adhere to measurable metrics to evaluate and report on progress and to allow for ongoing improvements to recruitment and retention efforts among communities underrepresented in clinical research

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation
Reporting to the Research Director, the Community Engagement Specialist supports to the Principal Investigators (PIs) and collaborates and advises all sub-Investigators, Clinical Trials Managers and Coordinators, and the GU MDP Senior Regulatory Manager.
They serve as primary liaison between the GU MDP and the ACTC RER Unit; and participates as GU MDP's representative in weekly, monthly and yearly meetings with the ACTC RER to share knowledge and feedback regarding study enrollment opportunities, barriers and long-term strategies for success.
They independently perform day-to-day job duties independently in the community, serving as lead GU MDP representative in the community, and also working as a team member toward establishing and improving effective recruitment and retention from communities underrepresented in clinical research into GU MDP research studies. As well, they organize all recruitment activities, develop and document all recruitment strategies, and serve as the primary liaison between community partners, community members and the GU MDP.
Most importantly, they interact and establish strong relationships with community partners and members to advance the commitments of both GU and the MDP to diversity and inclusion in Alzheimer's clinical research.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree
  • 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent [note: consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience]
  • Excellent organizational, communication and networking skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with investigators and community members to establish long-term working relationships
  • Keen attention to detail and self-direction with a solid base of management, Community Engagement and outreach skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to demonstrate successful track records using analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate professionally and clearly
  • Solid writing skills, including grammar, punctuation, composition and spelling
  • Computer proficiency with demonstrated knowledge of PC software programs, including Windows, MS Office, internet and email

Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of all clinical research options at the Georgetown UniversityMemory Disorders Program, as well as with compliance policies regarding the clinical regulatory environment
  • Experience in clinical research and/or medicine
  • Spanish-speaking ability
