The Collection Development Librarian develops, assesses, and maintains the Boise Public Library's print, media and electronic collections in order to meet the needs and interests of library users through the appropriate acquisition or removal of materials. Maintains a system-wide perspective of collection areas across multiple library locations and serves as a member of the Collection Development team. Develops and collaborates extensively with other members of the Lynx Library Consortium and maintains strong partnerships with other library divisions, community groups and agencies. This position acts as a steward for library collection data by generating and analyzing data and making efforts to improve data quality and integrity for use in decision making. This position works under general direction.Performs some duties of lower-level related positions, may provide assistance and training to others, and performs more complex, skilled tasks.
Develops library print, media, and electronic collections. Develops guidelines for Collection Development, assessment, and maintenance. Identifies and purchases items to be included in the collection. Examines gift items for appropriate content and physical condition for inclusion in the library collection. Builds customized data analysis tools, collects and analyzes collection data for harvesting reports, and uses the results to guide decision-making.
Maintains the budget in specified collection areas and provides input for system-wide collection. Closely tracks expenditures in order to spend effectively throughout the fiscal year.
Develops presentations and provide training to staff regarding Collection Development. Negotiates contracts and works with the city's purchasing team to acquire new electronic resource vendors. Works with the city's IT staff to set up and troubleshoot electronic resource authentication. Updates the public website as electronic resource vendors change. Provides information and assistance to internal and external customers. Interprets, communicates, and carries out the policies, procedures, and established practices of the Boise Public Library.
Develops and maintains Collection Development documentation and communication methods for system-wide access and input, such as the development and maintenance of the Collection Development website. Maintains and updates the Collection Development Manual. Identifies and corrects incorrect records and processing information in collaboration with other Acquisitions Technical Services Staff (ATS) members to correct physical items or the library's online database.
Leads and participates with interdepartmental teams to research, recommend, develop, and implement department policies and procedures related to intellectual freedom, customer access to information, Collection Development, work processes, and customer service and to address service issues affecting the library both currently and in the future. Communicates and collaborates with other Lynx Library Consortium staff. Stays informed about trends in Collection Development and public libraries.

Master's degree in library and information science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university and one year of experience providing customer service in a public library and searching records in an integrated library system (ILS) or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Knowledge of: public library organizations, department operations, and collections; library materials, authors, resources, and trends across a variety of subject areas; Collection Development tools, theories, and practices for public libraries; public library policies and procedures; principles of intellectual freedom and the Library Bill of Rights; library acquisitions and technical services work environments; library technology and integrated library system reporting tools; general office procedures and protocols; online information and subscription database searching; and computer usage including related software.
Ability to: adapt to changing internal and external technology; interact with customers and staff courteously and effectively; recognize and set priorities; plan, organize, and coordinate own work as well as work with others in a team setting; adapt to changing structures, policies, and procedures; use the integrated library system (ILS) to create and maintain record sets, search and obtain materials according to various criteria; use Umbraco to create, maintain and update digital resources listings; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Three years of experience as a professional librarian in the field of Collection Development in a public library system with branches or in consolidated Collection Development in a consortium setting.
Experience with: procurement and ordering practices; major library vendor content platforms; multiple modules of an integrated library system and searching and locating information in public online computer databases; detailed understanding of the item and bibliographic records and selection tools; and print resources to maintain and develop collections; and basic statistical analysis procedures to analyze collection and community data.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds. Also, the employee is rarely pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate and rarely very loud. Work includes the sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist, and gases or other airborne matter. Uneven sidewalks, traffic, and also winter weather conditions affect travel between parking lots and building entries.
This position works evenings and weekends if required to maintain library operations.Employment Type: Full Time Regular
