Job Summary

The Citizenship Instructor is a key member in the operation of Neighborhood House (NH)'s, employment and training programming. They report to the Citizenship Supervisor. They will report to the Citizenship Supervisor. This position has primary responsibilities of preparing and presenting effective lesson plans to the ESL/Civics students, so that they may take and successfully pass the English and US Civics test, as part of the process to become naturalized US Citizens, by utilizing teaching techniques that are effective for adult learning. These classes will encompass all levels of ESL students seeking immigration/naturalization services. Classes will be conducted for the High Point, Greenbridge, and Birch Creek Centers. To be successful is this a position must have a Bachelor's degree in TESOL or related field required, M.A. TESOL preferred.

Responsibilities

Administrative (30%)

Prepare Citizenship class and instructional materials.

Assist Supervisor with development of civic field experiences.

Conduct CASAS pre and post-test to understand the specific needs of each client and to identify their level of English.

Attend Staff meetings, partner meeting and trainings as needed.

Classroom Activities (50%)

Initiate outreach to eligible LPR's in the community for citizenship education

Maintain files for each client participating in the program including assessment and intake form.

Teach multi-level class weekly following the English competency levels required by the contract.

Provide one on one tutoring as needed.

Follow up with clients and assist them with preparing for citizenship tes, including mock interviews.

Data Entry (20%)

Maintain and provide quarterly data to the Program Manger.

Record and Maintain participate progress and outcomes in data base.

Work with program staff to evaluate the program's progress and identify needs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in adult education or related field and two years of experience teaching ESL classes, preferably in a community-based setting; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • TESOL Certification
  • Must have knowledge of United States civics and government
  • Ability to engage students in a classroom setting
  • Have respectful, open unbiased, and accepting attitude toward clients and their families
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a culturally diverse workplace dedicated to equity and inclusion.

  • Strong professional and ethical judgement, particularly in the human services context.
  • Very organized with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Self-starter, highly organized, dependable, have strong problem-solving skills and be able to manage multiple complex problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends.
  • Must have access to independent, reliable transportation for travel in King County.
  • Willingness to comply with established agency policies and performance standards, which may include productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer services, teamwork and maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Experience working with refugees and/or immigrants.
  • Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to read, write, and speak fluently in English.

Required Credentials

  • COVID-19 Vaccination (must be obtained and documentation submitted prior to employment).
  • Must pass Neighborhood House background check requirements.
  • Position requires Washington State bi-annual criminal background re-check.

Post-Hire on-the-job Training Requirements

  • Current First Aid Certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Current CPR Certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Sexual Harassment Training within 30 days of hire.
  • Child Abuse and Neglect training (within 2 weeks of hire).
