Job Corps is the largest nationwide residential career training program in the country and has been operating for more than 50 years. With a mission to “attract eligible young people, teach them the skills they need to become employable and independent, and place them in meaningful jobs or further education,” the program helps eligible young people ages 16 through 24 complete their high school education, trains them for meaningful careers, and assists them with obtaining employment. Job Corps has trained and educated over two million individuals since 1964.

At Job Corps, students have access to room and board while they learn skills in specific training areas for up to three years. In addition to helping students complete their education, obtain career technical skills and gain employment, the Career Transition Services Specialist also provides transitional support services, such as help finding employment, housing, child care, and transportation. Job Corps graduates either enter the workforce or an apprenticeship, go on to higher education, or join the military.

Aleut Odle Training & Development JV, (AOTD operates the US Department of Labor’s Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps Center. Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps Center provides education and vocational training for at-risk young adults on the 33-acre residential campus.

Reports to the Food Services Supervisor. Responsible for maintaining good housekeeping in the kitchen and dining areas. In addition, assists in the serving and preparation of food. Demonstrates on-going commitment to preparing young people for the workforce by modeling, mentoring and monitoring excellence in the eight Career Success Standards of: workplace relations and ethics; information management; communications; multicultural awareness; personal growth and development; career and personal planning; interpersonal skills and independent living.

  1. Demonstrates and abides by ODLE Core Values and operating principles.
  2. Assists in the preparation of food.
  3. Assists in serving food.
  4. Cleans and maintains dining room and kitchen facilities.
  5. Operates dish-washing equipment.
  6. Cleans and checks service equipment.
  7. Fills salt, pepper and napkin dispensers after each meal.
  8. Assists in moving and storing supplies.
  9. Works within established safety guidelines.
  10. Attends required staff training sessions
  11. Clearly communicates and consistently models appropriate CSS and employability skills including personal responsibility and computer fluency.
  12. Maintains accountability of staff, students, and property, adheres to safety practices in all areas of responsibility.
  13. Cultivates and maintains a climate on center that is free of harassment, intimidation and disrespect to provide a safe place for staff and students to work and learn.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Ability to fluently read and write English.
  • Three months of experience in food service.

Additional Requirements:

Well-developed habits of personal cleanliness and hygiene. Must meet state or local food handling requirements, whichever are more restrictive. Must maintain CPR/First Aid certification. Ability to effectively relate to trainee population.

Working Conditions:

This position involves frequent sitting and occasional standing, walking, bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling. Applicant must be able to see, hear, and speak.

Environmental Demands:

Position requires ability to spend 5% of work time outside and 95% of work time indoors; ability to withstand moderate noise levels, including voice levels 90% of work time; ability to work in heat up to 95 degrees outdoors in summer months; and ability to work in temperatures as low as 33 degrees in winter months.

Position requires an ability to operate office equipment. In addition, individual must be able to interact with team members and maintain an effective working relationship with all facility staff and departments.
