JOB SUMMARY
The Bus Attendant assists students during transport to and from school and special activities; and ensures the safety and well-being of the special education students on the bus.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check.
Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Speak, read, write, and present professionally, analyze, and interpret English written and verbal communications.
  3. Adaptability and understanding of cultural differences and in working in a diverse environment while coping with stressful situations related to students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
These are examples of skills and experience that the best qualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.
  1. Prior experience working with children with special needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions, as required.
  2. As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  3. Assist bus driver in the instruction of students (e.g. bus safety, safe crossing, safe loading and unloading, staying out of danger zone, etc.) to enforcing rules/regulations and maintain safety.
  4. Assist other personnel and perform other duties as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
  5. Assist special education students (e.g. crossing in front of bus, getting wheelchairs off/on, securing wheelchairs, attaching safety vests, during evacuation drills, walkers, etc.) to ensure they drop off at appropriate destinations and get safely to the curb or sidewalk along with providing for special needs during transport, safe loading and unloading from buses, including both emergency situations and normal transport.
  6. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders.
  7. Exercise good judgment and discretion while maintaining confidentiality to promote a positive working environment.
  8. Learns bus routes to assist to substitute bus drivers filling in for the regular driver.
  9. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively.
  10. Monitors student behavior (e.g. unruly, disruptive, abusive language, physical challenges, weapons, drugs, etc.) to prevent distraction to the driver or injury to themselves or other students/passengers.
  11. Monitor students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc.
  12. Participate in meetings, workshops, seminars, as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or or gathering information required to perform functions.
  13. Prepare documentation (e.g. incident reports, records, required by school district, etc.) to document activities, provide written support and/or convey information.
  14. Report observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) to appropriate personnel.
  15. Respond to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, etc.) to resolve immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  16. Secure students with seat belts and wheelchairs with tie downs to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
  17. Speak, read, write, analyze, understand, and follow written and verbal communication in English including grammar and punctuation; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing.
  18. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the position.
  19. Work under limited supervision, utilizing time-management and prioritization strategies, accurately processing detailed information and meeting deadlines.
  20. Other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYEE SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
