BPC Laboratory Intake Manager - RI Tegmeier
The Biopathology Center (BPC) within The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH) is a primarily grant-funded biorepository and clinical laboratory with the objective of acquisition and long-term storage of a large number of cancerous, normal, and diseased biospecimens and related data. These biospecimens are used for the purpose of supporting and facilitating cutting edge research and advancing clinical patient care. In accordance with provisions of approved protocols, the BPC serves as biorepositories for the Children's Oncology Group (COG), NRG Oncology, SWOG (formerly the Southwest Oncology Group), the Pediatric Division of the Cooperative Human Tissue Network (pCHTN), Early-Phase and Experimental Clinical Trials (EET), and other sponsor groups. The BPC Laboratory Manager evaluates, plans, and implements the administrative, supervisory, and operational activities for assigned section team staff. Manages a team of laboratory professionals and support staff to ensure delivery of laboratory services relative to section. Provides leadership for complex programs by communicating goals and strategies, providing direction and priorities and providing enthusiasm and support.

Responsibilities
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages day-to-day operations of the department. Oversees the delivery of biorepository laboratory services by all professional and support staff within the assigned section. Ensures that performance standards for all staff are met.
- Recruit, train, evaluate, develop, and as necessary, discipline and/or terminate subordinate staff.
- Develops clear goals for self and staff and maintains a positive attitude toward attainment of those goals.
- Maintains awareness of staff development issues, providing timely and specific feedback and challenging staff through task assignment.
- Ensures the orientation of section personnel to role functions, policies and procedures and information systems. Assists and directs staff in the identification of their own learning needs and assists staff in meeting those needs.
- Coordinates staff representation on departmental, hospital and community task forces, committees, quality teams and advisory groups. Serves as a representative to such groups when appropriate.
- Promotes teamwork by building a team environment and fostering cross functional collaboration.
- Monitors and ensures appropriate use of grant, contract, and other funding resources by maintaining appropriate supply inventory and staffing for the section based on current and projected needs.
- Develops lab section policies and procedures and participates in the review of other NCH and lab-wide policies and procedures as appropriate.
- Understands quality and performance improvement methodology and achieves measurable outcomes. Accountable for the quality and process improvement and safety initiatives for area(s) of responsibility.
- Ensures that all safety regulations are enforced within the section and maintain preparation for EOC rounds.
- Maintains all required documentation for lab certification and accreditation, including the College of American Pathologists Laboratory and Biorepository accreditation programs.
- Maintains knowledge of and educates and involves staff in accreditation standards.
- Ensures that problems are documented in lab QA software, are resolved, and impacted users are notified of new procedures, changes, problems, etc. Pull and distribute QA monitor data to the staff.
- Represents lab section and serves as a liaison with other managers, department leadership, and external customers and sponsors as needed.
- Effectively delegates some tasks to Supervisors or other subordinate staff in order to meet the demands of the workload.
- Participates in BPC strategic planning. Develops and implements plans to meet Nationwide Children's Hospital/Abigail Wexner Research Institute and Biopathology Center goals.
- Assists with writing or editing information related to the lab section and/or providing budgeting information for funding proposals and/or progress reports.
- Supervises the implementation of new testing or other systems, software upgrades, system interfaces, and ensures that these changes and the corresponding validation procedures are appropriately documented. Inform other lab sections of changes that affect their procedure in a timely manner.
- Attends continuing education seminars and workshops relevant to the section. Coordinates networking and continuing education opportunities covering clinical, diversity, research, and inter-department awareness.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to: Director/PI CONTACTS: Internal: Patients/families/guardians; all levels of staff within NCH External: PI's, cooperative groups as mentioned, physicians; students; instructors; regulatory agency surveyors, other care providers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in science, hospital administration, business administration, or closely related field strongly preferred (or within 3 years). Bachelor's degree in laboratory science, medical technology, or related field.
- Five years applicable experience in a biorepository and/or laboratory environment. Experience with translational and clinical trials strongly preferred, preferably in an academic medical setting.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, highly organized, ability to interact at all levels within the organization and government groups, and ability to comprehend clinical trial protocols and scientific articles.
- Supervisory skills required to plan, assign, direct, and evaluate the work of subordinate staff.
- High level of initiative, self-direction, and accountability for actions required.
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills required. Demonstrates the ability to adjust to change, handle interruptions and function with changing circumstances.
- Skill in promoting multidisciplinary collaboration; effective interpersonal skills required in interactions with department staff, other NCH teams, and external sponsors/customers. Demonstrate the ability to change manner of communication styles to adapt to various cultural differences.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
