The primary role of the Bioinformatics Specialist position is to apply bioinformatics algorithms and software tools for the analysis of high throughput omics clinical data. This position contributes to the development and application of high performance computational applications and pipelines to support the Shriners Children’s Genomics Institute (SCGI) under the Lead Scientist’s supervision. The Bioinformatics Specialist will develop tools and perform genomic analyses with the primary goal of enhancing our understanding of the genetic bases of the pediatric conditions treated at SHC. The goal of this program is to perform a molecular analysis of the pediatric disorders identified in SHC patients to: 1) discern the genetic bases of these conditions in our patient population; 2) investigate other clinically relevant mutations and genetic modifiers in this population group; 3) capture, access, and analyze clinical and experimental information, including with the application of machine learning tools, in order to build a high profile genomics research capability and transition into precision medicine  and 4) develop personalized diagnoses and therapies that ultimately improve patient care. The SHCGI also provides support to several clinical projects as a sequencing and bioinformatics core facility. SHC is seeking an innovative, independent and collaborative scientist with expertise in bioinformatics to support our translational genomics efforts. The successful candidate will report to the SHCGI Director and will be responsible for identifying novel disease-related variants and pathways, and developing and implementing bioinformatics activities and pipelines that will expand our genomics and bioinformatics capabilities. A key aspect of the work relates to the creation and/or usage of data analysis algorithms and specialized software packages to annotate NGS sequencing data and to compile vast amounts of information from approaches such as DNAseq for rare Mendelian diseases, gene expression profiling (RNA-seq) and other applications. The Bioinformatics Specialist maintains documentation and appropriate version control of software, and keeps abreast with relevant scientific and medical journals. They will contribute to the bioinformatics organization of the laboratory and represent the research team at conferences and meetings.

The preference would be to have the Scientist working a hybrid schedule, including working onsite at our Research Lab located on the USF Tampa campus, but candidates outside of the area may be considered.  Some minimal regional and national travel may be required for this role.


Position responsibilities include supporting and contributing to the bioinformatics pipeline development and data management; applying scientific concepts to perform data analysis of proposed research projects; demonstrating knowledge of ethical and participant safety considerations; facilitating communication and teamwork; and exhibiting professionalism and leadership skills.


Experience Required:

  • 3 years of bioinformatics or computational biology or related fields with a Bachelor's Degree, or 1 year of bioinformatics or computational biology with a Master's Degree
  • Deep understanding of genomics and molecular biology
  • Analyzing large sequencing datasets
  • Building NGS data analysis pipeline, specifically DNA-seq using Illumina NextSeq and NovaSeq platforms
  • Version control tools

Experience Preferred:

  • Experience working with a CAP/CLIA lab preferred

 

Education Required:

  • Bachelor's in Bioinformtics, Computational Biology or related fields
