To provide legal services (advice and representation) as required by the Bylaws of the Corporation of Gonzaga University to University officials on a wide variety of legal matters as assigned by General Counsel (GC) for the University.

The Office of General Counsel seeks to fill a full-time Associate General Counsel ( AGC) position. The Office of General Counsel (GC) provides comprehensive legal services to Gonzaga University by handling a wide variety of legal issues regarding Gonzaga's many departments and activities. The AGC will assist the GC primarily in employment, Title IX, and student matters. AGC may assist with other legal matters as needed, including but not limited to contract review and drafting, business transactions, intellectual property, and compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations. Higher education legal practice experience is required. Knowledge of the unique nature of the higher educational system and understanding of legal issues faced by colleges and universities is required.

For this role we are targeting a beginning salary of up to $180,000.

  • Provides legal advice on employment, Title IX, student, and other legal matters for the Corporation of Gonzaga University, primarily through University officers and administrators.
  • Conducts legal research. Analyzes and interprets research and composes memorandums or opinions advising the University on various legal matters.
  • Reviews legal documents. Prepares agreements and other legal documents as necessary.
  • Attends meetings and hearings representing the University's position.
  • Provides back-up for General Counsel as needed, attending meetings, hearings and providing legal advice in the absence of General Counsel.

Position reports to the General Counsel and is expected to operate independently, utilizing professional discretion and judgment. In the absence of General Counsel, may provide supervision to Assistant to the General Counsel and law clerk/legal intern.

Qualifications/Knowledge Required/Years Experience Required

Degree Required Terminal Degree Certifications and/or Licensures required
Licensed member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association
Knowledge Required Specialist Knowledge in field Years Experience Required 5-7.99 years Minimum Qualifications
  • A Juris Doctorate or equivalent degree in Law from an accredited law school
  • At least 6 years' experience as a licensed practicing attorney
  • At least 3 years' experience in higher education law practice
  • Knowledge of employment law, including wage and hour, discipline and dismissal, performance management, workplace conduct, retaliation, disability accommodation, and harassment and discrimination.
  • Knowledge of higher education law, including faculty, student and academic matters, state and federal regulatory compliance, FERPA, intercollegiate athletics, intellectual property, and immigration.
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated sound judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work with a diverse group of people representing the University in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple diverse legal matters simultaneously.
  • Awareness of and compatibility with the University's mission statement.
