SUMMARY:

The Associate Director of Research will play an important role in the ALS Association’s overall mission to make ALS a livable disease by 2030. The successful candidate will oversee and manage contracting, operations, and budget functions of the research program and oversee the pre- and post-award activities for the Association’s portfolio of grants. The Associate Director will work closely with other members of the Research and Mission Initiatives Team and develop strategies to assure efficiency and effectiveness of the research program.  The ideal candidate will manage the Association’s tracking process to ensure that research program goals and priorities are achieved in the timely fashion.

The Associate Director of Research reports to the Senior Vice President of Research and will collaborate closely with colleagues in the mission, development, marketing and finance departments. The position will be based in the Arlington, Virginia, office of The ALS Association or may be based remotely from a major metropolitan market. This position may involve travel to Association’s head office in Virginia as determined by business needs.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Manage and oversee proper administration at both pre and post award activities for the Association’s portfolio of grants.
  • Work closely with the Research team at the Association to develop and manage timelines for launch of new funding programs.
  • Develop, track and manage yearly budgets to ensure research spending approved by the board is met. Develop and manage budgets for other mission initiatives in the department.
  • Responsible for grant contracting including putting together contracts, negotiations, and interacting with legal counsel.
  • Lead in creating, organizing, and updating research program policies and processes.
  • Identify grants management issues and/or areas of improvement and work with internal and external staff to problem solve.
  • Develop processes to measure impact and leverage of research program funding.
  • Manage Association’s tracking process to ensure alignment and progress towards the goals outlined in the committee strategic implementation plan.
  • Develop agenda, reports, and presentations for Research committee meetings.
  • Represent Association’s research program and become active participant in HRA and other research consortia.
  • Develop and run precompetitive consortia (e.g., Safenowitz Fellow Consortium).
  • Always convey a professional and positive image that reflects favorably on The ALS Association.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position will be supervising a grants associate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (such as business administration, accounting, grants management).
  • 5+ years’ experience in the non-profit sector, specifically with grants management or experience in administration and management of biomedical research programs desired.
  • Proficiency with various computer systems and databases including Microsoft Office and Proposal Central or the equivalent grant management system.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; able to communicate with both internal and external audiences.
  • Detail-oriented, strong organizational skills, and capable of handling diverse assignments.
  • Effectively multi-task, establish priorities, and work in a fast-paced environment; highly efficient in time management and can meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Team player who can build excellent working relationships both internally and externally.

PAY TRANSPARENCY:

The ALS Association’s pay range for this position is $63,000 - $95,000 annually.

The ALS Association has compensation ranges for various work locations throughout the United States, allowing us to compensate employees competitively and consistently in diverse geographic markets. The above-listed listed range shows prospective compensation for this role; the appropriate range will be established by what is eventually determined to be the candidate's primary work location. Various factors, including the complexity and significance of the role, job duties/requirements, relevant experience and abilities, and primary work location, determine individual compensation. Compensation ranges are evaluated and typically adjusted on a regular basis. Offers are made within the compensation range that is in effect at the time of the job offer.

The Association may, at its discretion, offer merit-based increases tied to individual performance. The benefits listed may differ depending on employment status with the Association. Healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with employer match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, well-being benefits, paid time off and several paid holidays are available to Association employees, among other benefits.
