PURPOSE:

Reporting to Associate Vice President for Development (AVPD), the Associate Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations (ADCFR) will play a key role in managing corporate and foundation fundraising efforts in support of institutional priorities. The Associate Director works with university leadership, faculty and constituent programs to successfully meet the corporate and foundation goals. Through collaboration, ADCFR alerts campus units to relevant grant opportunities.  

In coordination with the AVPD the ADCFR will plan and implement fundraising strategies for a portfolio of corporate and foundation funders. meet annual goals for cash, proposals submitted, success rate and contacts among others. The position will also manage and grow a personal portfolio of key local, regional and national corporate and foundation prospects. Expectations of the position include working in a collegial manner within University Advancement and across the university in creating and implementing strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward corporate and foundation prospects and donors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Builds and manages a portfolio of corporate & foundation donors and prospective donors for major gift commitments for identified CSU Monterey Bay fundraising objectives. These efforts will include identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Conducts 7 to 12 field contacts per month. Moves prospective donors through the traditional cultivation, solicitation and stewardship cycle recording actions in a moves management system.
  2. Supports the Annual Gift program with her/his assigned prospects through annual funding requests as appropriate.
  3. Under the guidance of the Associate Vice President collaboratively prepares and implements an annual strategic plan. 
  4. Assists the entire University Development team in coordination of special events and activities, including with other offices of the University.
  5. Ensures that appropriate development policies, procedures and safeguards exist and function in the best interest of the University.
  6. Collaborates with the Associate Vice President for Development and unit colleagues to develop short- and long-term objectives to meet CFR goals.
  7. Develops and manages key corporate and foundation relationships to secure gifts for the university.
  8. Uses a comprehensive and collaborative strategic and systematic approach in the development of the CFR program.
  9. Develops relationships with university, academic and constituent program leadership in order to understand their priorities and identify appropriate corporate and foundation support.
  10. Focuses on creating and submitting grant requests to fulfill the approved university gift opportunities; ensures the involvement of necessary university personnel and oversees and tracks the requests.
  11. Meets on a regular basis with the Executive Assistant for University Advancement to review development activity, to assess strategies in place for corporate and foundation prospects, to ensure distribution of necessary follow-up reports and letters and to direct the coordination of appropriate gift announcements.
  12. Participates in special off- and on-campus visits and special projects to ensure proper coordination and involvement.

Other Functions:

  1. Supports University Development projects and plans as they relate to the corporate and foundation relations program.
  2. Represents CSUMB and participates in external events, task forces, system-wide planning/coordination and special projects as directed.
  3. Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of fundraising techniques. Knowledge of proposal development, prospect identification, fund solicitation, and donor tracking. 

Skills: Excellent writing skills. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.  Demonstrated ability in successful donor research, donor relations, and proposal development.  Knowledge of working with prospect research and cultivation, public relations, donor solicitation, recognition and stewardship. Possession of strong computer skills including spreadsheet, word processing, and database query.

Ability: to rapidly become familiar with university-wide program areas; implement policy and procedures; effectively communicate, persuade, negotiate, influence, collaborate and resolve issues with various constituents in a collaborative manner; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to disseminate a variety of information about the university, objectives and plans, to all levels of university personnel or external clients; work tactfully and efficiently with campus staff, donors and volunteers; make constructive recommendations for modifications of improvements of methods, procedures, techniques or programs; train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field AND three (3) years of related experience. Familiarity with donor engagement strategies in higher education or nonprofit institutions. Additional education or experience in a related field which has demonstrated acquisition and successful application of required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted for the required education and/or experience on a year-for-year basis.  Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge, skills and abilities identified above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum five years related experience preferred.  Demonstrated success and increased responsibility building relationships especially with corporations and foundations. Familiarity with the university environment and experience working with diverse populations.  Ability to work in a fast-paced academic environment.  Multilingual ability, international or multicultural experience, effective interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, and knowledge of the local region are desired. Technical fluency with Raiser's Edge NXT, Microsoft Office Professional Suite, Oracle-PeopleSoft/CMS baseline system; and Google mail and calendaring programs.  Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB's Vision.

Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage.
  • May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks.  The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
