Summary
The Assistant Manager, Ocean Carrier Services position will manage outbound and inbound vessel operations on U.S. West Coast and Canada. The position will be responsible for coordination to the vessel operations before arriving and after departing the area, as needed. The position further manages support functions to the operations such as Maritime Service Suppliers and Regulatory compliance matters.
Responsibilities
- Establish Base Operations Schedules
- Oversee operations requirements of all commercial contracts
- Oversee and review established service procedures (correct when needed)
- Create vessel schedules based on known criteria and distribute to all necessary parties
- Prepare and review operational reports and schedules to ensure accuracy and efficiency
- Set goals and deadlines for the department
- Plan, organize, or manage the work of subordinate staff to ensure that the work is accomplished in a manner consistent with organizational requirements
- Prepare staff work schedules and assign specific duties
- Implement schedule or policy changes for transportation services
- Direct investigations to verify and resolve customer or shipper complaints
- Develop & Implement Working Plans
- Advance schedules into detailed working plans based on vessel, port, and cargo characteristics and constraints
- Communicate back and forth with vessels, port personnel, and commercial entities to make detailed working program for the vessel
- Monitor results and adjust schedules as needed
- Business Development
- Review established Maritime Service performance
- Seek improvements, alternates, or create new possibilities for Maritime Services
- Study possibilities for improving supplier performance
- Report results and make recommendations
- Utilize an objective measuring system to review supplier performance in the area if use
- Compliance
- Keep awareness to regulatory requirements
- Proactively ensure all operational matters are considered with compliance to regulatory requirements
- Train fellow employees on established and new compliance matters, as needed
- Monitor activities of individuals to ensure safety or compliance with rules

Qualifications
Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient PC skills - Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Database Management System experience highly preferred
- Strong ability to identify and correct errors
- Detail oriented with ability to work in deadline-driven environment
- Knowledge of business and management principles in strategic planning
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams in fast paced environment
Education & Experience
- Bachelors Degree is Required
- Six (6) - Nine (9) Years of Experience in Ocean Carrier Services, Vessel Operations, and/or Port Operations Required
- Seven (7) - Eleven (11) Years of Related Experience in Ocean Carrier Services, Vessel Operations, and/or Port Operations Preferred
- One (1) - Three (3) Years of Supervisory Experience Required
- Specialized Trade Training Preferred
- HAZMAT Training Certificate Preferred
