About Us:

The mission of The Adjutant General's Department Fire and Emergency Services is to respond to airport/aircraft rescue and firefighting emergencies with commitment, integrity and teamwork. To support the mission and vision with the highest quality of service to those who defend America and the community.

What You'll Do:

Under general direction of the federal fire chief supervises staff members on all 3 (24 hour) shifts.  Directs airport/aircraft rescue & fire suppression operations.  Thorough knowledge of supervisory/managerial principles and techniques.   Agency, state and federal rules and regulations as related to fire protection.  Firefighting emergency practices & safety procedures and chemistry of fires in order to supervise fire fighter staff members.  

  • Assists in the development and implementation of the fire protection program and supervises assigned workforce shifts.
  • Develops work standards and writes performance appraisals.
  • Assigns tasks and duties to workforce to ensure efficient daily operations of fire station and equipment.
  • Coordinates work schedules, approves leave time, maintains daily time and attendance reports.
  • Resolves grievances and issues discipline when needed.
  • Participates in interviews for new hires and promotions.
  • In the absence of the fire chief, performs administrative duties.
  • Responds to all types of emergencies situations (e.g., fires, fuel spills, aircraft emergencies, structural fires, medical and other related emergencies).  Supports activities and performs the functions of on the scene commander.
  • Wears protective clothing and safety equipment in accordance with National Fire Protection Association 1500 standards, when on duty, participating in fire extinguishment and other hazardous situations.
  • Drives or operates a variety of fire department equipment.
  • Maintains readiness to respond to emergency situations by attending and participating in fire protection related training classes and programs as required by Air Force and Air National Guard regulations and instructions, National Fire Protection Association Standards, state and local requirements as applicable to fire protection. 
  • Attend and participate in Department of Defense or agency sponsored and/or ongoing training courses.
  • Participates in an ongoing physical fitness training program and satisfactorily complete annual physical evaluation.
  • 24 hours followed by 48 hours off. Overtime as authorized by an administrative authority.
  • Assigned to any shift rotation or work schedule with short notice to comply workforce requirements.

The following are the minimum qualifications for this position. For further consideration, applicants must clearly identify how qualifications are met within the education and/or experience sections of the application. The ideal candidate, at minimum, must meet the following criteria. 

  • Possess high school diploma or GED minimum
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Must have successfully completed current entry level National Fire Protection Association 1582 physical*
  • Must pass entry level agility test
  • Must possess International Fire Services Accreditation Congress, accreditation certification of completion of National Fire Protection Association Fire Fighter I, Fire Fighter II, Driver Operator (e.g., assigned vehicles), Airport Fire Fighter, Fire Officer I, Fire Officer II, Fire Officer III, Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operational levels, DOD Hazardous Materials Incident Command, Fire Service Instructor I, Fire Service Instructor II, Fire Inspector I, Fire Inspector II.
  • Must have at least three years' experience as a full-time Captain Fire Fighter or the equivalent

Based on manpower authorization at selected departments, certification levels may be required to exceed levels listed within & comply with those specified in AFMAN 32-2003, or military or civilian equivalent.

*1582 Physical - If not currently available, must be accomplished prior to appointment.

Note: The requirements or qualifications are in accordance with NGRS 5-1/ANGI-63-101-PARA.36-10.
