GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This position will supervise, plan, organize, implement, and evaluate the daily operations of a comprehensive instructional program to include group exercise classes and non-credit community classes and collaborate with the professional fitness/wellness staff in administering a comprehensive fitness program for the University community.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position reports to the Director, Wellness Programs and directly supervises up to 40 temporary workers and 15-30 student employees.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan, administer and evaluate comprehensive and innovative instructional program to include a group exercise program (e.g. aerobics, yoga, studio cycling, circuit classes) and non-credit community classes (e.g. physical activity classes, swim and sport lessons, CPR, fee based cooking classes).
  • Hire, train, and schedule all program instructors and assist with instructor payroll.
  • Conduct and maintain annual group exercise instructor evaluations and development as well as class quality control procedures.
  • Collaborate with sales office management to evaluate registration procedures for all group exercise and community classes.
  • Assists with coordinating marketing efforts for instructional classes and programs.
  • Determine program fiscal needs, develop and meet revenue goals, prepare budget recommendations, determine class enrollment and set fee rates.
  • Recommend and/or select equipment and supplies to be purchased for the group exercise and community classes.
  • Assist with the supervision of exercise programs for special populations and other exercise/fitness services as requested.
  • Collaborate with the fitness/wellness team on annual special events and projects.
  • Provide timely and detailed financial, progress, and participation reports as requested.
  • Develop certification opportunities for fitness, aerobics and aquatics instructors; and offer in-service continuing education for certified personnel.
  • Understand, follow and communicate all department and University risk management policies to employees. Assist in the development of the department risk management program.
  • Keep abreast of current trends and research in fitness field; obtain and maintain appropriate certifications if necessary.
  • Possess a personal commitment to a wellness lifestyle.
  • Complete other reports and assignments as required by the Director, Wellness Programs or the Executive Director of the Department of Wellness and Recreation.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in kinesiology, exercise science or related field required (Master's degree preferred).
  • Current CPR/AED certification required.
  • NCCA accredited fitness certification preferred

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience in the areas of fitness related management or wellness.
  • Supervisory and management experience required within the two years.
  • Group exercise instruction and training experience.
  • Due to the nature of the responsibilities, a variable work schedule (early mornings, evenings and weekends) is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of basic exercise guidelines, group exercise formats and exercise safety for healthy and diseased populations.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, guidelines, and fitness trends.
  • Working knowledge of cardiovascular and resistance training equipment.
  • Willingness to obtain continuing education and remain abreast of exercise related guidelines.
  • Superb organizational skills and ability to meet times sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and customer service skills.
  • General computer knowledge.
