About the Team

The Research and Development (R&D) Unit of the College Board Latin America Office (CB-LATAM) leads research and development efforts, test design strategy as well as production and publishing cycles to deliver high-quality assessments and advance our mission to connect students with college success and career opportunities so that they can own their future. Our programs include the following: PAA, CB-LATAM's flagship college readiness assessment, Pruebas de Ingreso y Evaluación para el Nivel Secundario (PIENSE), Conoce, Explora, Planifica y Actúa (CEPA) and Prueba de Nivel Avanzado (PNA) - collectively known as CB-LATAM's PAA Suite of Assessments. Other CB-LATAM programs include: English Language Assessment System for Hispanics (ELASH) and Prueba para la Certificación de Maestros - Puerto Rico (PCMAS).

About the Opportunity

As Assistant Director, Test Development-Spanish within the R&D Unit you play a strong role in planning, organizing, and reviewing the work of item writers, editors, proofreaders, consultants, and committee of examiners for CB-LATAM assessments with Spanish content domains which is central to College Board's business. In collaboration with R&D's leadership team, you are responsible for day-to-day operational work and strategic efforts in a content-driven manner. As such, you will partner with and work with other subject matter experts (SMEs), researchers, analysts, program staff, and other team members to lead, support or advance program and organizational goals. The Assistant Director, Test Development-Spanish trains external SMEs, typically college professors and school teachers, on assessment development protocols, translates between academics and technical experts, and collaborates in the development of formative assessment materials and resources to support College Board LATAM programs. As an inhouse subject matter expert for Spanish content domains, you will engage with different levels of educational stakeholders in Puerto Rico and Latin America and distill relevant data into clear, compelling, and actionable insights to promote learning, teaching practices and timely interventions. This position requires not only subject-matter expertise but also extensive knowledge of curriculum design and development, teaching experience, as well as skills in technologies relevant for item creation, test development and testing.

In this role, you will

Test Development and Design (65%)
  • Responsible for test development and design efforts for College Board LATAM assessments with Spanish content domains.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to the development and management of College Board LATAM assessments with Spanish content domains through iterative review stages with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • Responsible for development of assessment forms with approved test specifications and ensure that our tests meet rigorous internal and industry standards.
  • Recruit external SEMs to serve as item writers, committee of examiners' members, editors, and proofreaders for College Board LATAM assessments with Spanish content domains.
  • Responsible for authoring/revising assessment content and training educator constituents to author assessment content, including selection of appropriate stimulus material, and applying best assessment practices.
  • Conduct multiple face-to-face and virtual meetings with each of the committees within your stewardship as well as other committee meetings in the discipline as needed.
  • Actively support the development of study guides, practice, and other ancillary materials related College Board LATAM assessments with Spanish content domains.
  • Actively support strategic initiatives for future developments.


Assessment Quality, Process and Communication (35%)
  • Support, refine and improve item authoring procedures, question task models as well as exam design in collaboration with and aligned to other CB-LATAM initiatives.
  • Contribute to processes for efficient, high quality assessment development.
  • Collaborate with production project managers to establish schedules for test item and test form development.
  • Monitor exam quality, fairness, and cultural sensibility.
  • Contribute to current research and best practices related to assessment; participate in regular discussions with other R&D's members on the current assessment standards and practices to build a set of common, shared beliefs about College Board LATAM assessments with Spanish content domains within the larger educational and assessment community.
  • Communicate relevant data into clear, compelling, and actionable insights in reports, workshops, seminar, and presentations to support teaching and learning practices.
  • Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned or required.


About You:

You have:
  • Graduate degree or post graduate studies in Curriculum and Instruction in Spanish, Hispanic Studies, Applied Linguistics, Latin American/Spanish Literature or related fields.
  • Extensive classroom (or college equivalent) teaching experience.
  • Experience with standardized assessment design or development (beyond an individual classroom).
  • Experience with instructional design and implementation of professional learning for educators.
  • Superior language skills in Spanish and good communications skills in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills, including the ability to interact with staff at all levels and give and receive feedback.
  • Strong individual contributor and team player with a sense of ownership, persistent with sharp attention to detail, and the ability to work on several projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills, including the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, including the ability to closely proofread assessment material.
  • Excellent skills in process and procedure implementation, including adhering to project plans and schedules, and maintaining project management documentation for tracking.
  • Takes initiative and uses best judgment to make decisions in the absence of specific directions.
  • Willingness to give, accept, and address constructive feedback with positivity.

  • We believe in compensating staff members fairly in relation to each other, their qualifications, and their impact. The salary range for a new employee in this position is $35,000 to $52,000. The salary offer of an individual candidate within this range is specific to their location and qualifications.
