Broad Scope & Function

The Assistant Director of Recreation Programs is responsible for a well-organized campus-wide Intramural Sports program, Recreational Therapy program, and Climbing and Group Facilitation program. This position serves as a key member of the upper management decision-making team for campus recreation in which they will direct and manage staff, programs, and partnerships on campus that help develop and support the mission of The WELL. This position is also responsible for the evaluation and assessment of all programs in their area.


Reporting Relationship

The position reports to and receives general direction from the Director of The WELL. The position will supervise the Intramural Sports Coordinator, Recreational Therapist, Coordinator of Climbing and Group Facilitation, and all other full-time and part-time staff in their respective area, including internships, graduate assistants, volunteers, and any other student work programs that are appropriate.

Conditions of Employment

This is a full-time, exempt from overtime, benefited position, covered under the California Public Employees’ Retirement System. Continued employment in this position is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the employee, and either University Enterprises or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures the development, coordination, organization, and implementation of a balanced and varied Intramural Sports program for all members of The WELL.
  • Provides direction to others and is responsible for the management of all Intramural Sports, Recreational Therapy, Climbing and Group Facilitation program areas including hiring, training, and supervision of full-time staff, graduate assistants, student staff, volunteers, and overall staff operations.
  • Ensures all Intramural activities are conducted in accordance with established and approved rules and regulations that address participant’s safety as a high priority as well as established service standards.
  • Ensures the development, coordination, organization, and implementation of a quality Recreational Therapy program.
  • Responsible for the safety, purchasing, equipment maintenance, and replacement of adaptive sports equipment and working with the appropriate equipment vendors.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with campus and community organizations to support the Recreational Therapy program.
  • Ensures the development, coordination, and implementation of a quality rock climbing wall program for all members. Oversees all rock climbing wall equipment, maintenance, safety, purchasing, and equipment replacement.
  • Ensures the development and management of group facilitation services.
  • Responsible for the management and development of all financial transactions pertaining to Intramural Sports, Recreational Therapy, Climbing and Group Facilitation. Creates and manages an annual budget and year-end projections with a high level of accuracy for all associated programs. Responsible for capital repair and replacement projects within area of responsibility.
  • Seeks and secures program-related sponsorships and/or grant funding to support program areas of oversight.
  • Provides guidance to others and ensures that appropriate operating agreements, Memorandum of Understandings, and service contracts are executed for all areas of oversight.
  • Oversees the ongoing assessment of all related programs, including completing participant evaluations and/or assessments, focus groups, informal discussion, and written program surveys.
  • Recommends future modifications to programs using structured member feedback through ongoing evaluations, focus groups, and surveys. Makes improvements and recommends innovations and changes that enhance the programs and facility.
  • Creates and leads a dynamic and motivated staff and volunteer team using a high-quality process including hiring, training, development, and evaluation of staff and volunteers.
  • Supports and maintains a sound working relationship with all partners in the WELL, in order to create a dynamic and fully collaborative recreation and wellness program.
  • Helps create strategic priorities and/or annual project lists that are responsive to student, faculty, and staff input regarding programs and services in the WELL.
  • Works with other Assistant Directors to ensure all needed safety equipment is purchased, maintained, repaired, stored, and inventoried in accordance to appropriate standards.
  • Analyzes and establishes proper staffing levels to meet program safety standards. Develops and maintains a core staff to operate specified program areas.
  • Ensures that employees are provided with safety training and attend safety meetings, and that staff conduct daily safety inspections of equipment for compliance with standard industry regulations. Develops and conducts safety and risk management training for staff regarding equipment and other related items and/or activities.
  • Responsible for risk management associated with all events and assigned program areas. Consults as needed with the Director and proposes appropriate policy changes to provide a safe environment for all.
  • Presents policies and program proposals to The WELL Advisory Group and serves as content expert during the presentations.
  • Maintains knowledge and understanding of pertinent governmental health and safety codes for operations of the facility, including updates to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it pertains to facilities.
  • Creates student learning objectives and an assessment program that will demonstrate the attainment of skills, knowledge, and overall personal growth as a result of participation as a student employee or volunteer.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends periodically based on programming schedule.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature as requested by The Director of The WELL and, when designated, can act in the absence of the Director.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Business, Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated progressively responsible intramural management experience within campus recreation or equivalent experience in another recreational setting.
  • Demonstrated supervisory or management experience. Demonstrated experience in selecting, training, coordinating, evaluating, and supervising a diverse workforce.
  • Demonstrated progressively responsible assessment management experience within campus recreation or equivalent experience in another recreational setting.
  • Knowledge of inclusive recreation and adaptive sports programming.
  • Knowledge of pertinent governmental health and safety codes for operations of a recreation environment, including updates to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it pertains to facilities.
  • Must acquire CPR/AED and First Aid Instructor certification within three (3) months of employment. Certification must be kept current.
  • Demonstrated experience with rock climbing programs, including safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge of facilitation skills for team-building activities.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting and facilities management.
  • Ability to direct management goals, to facilitate change, and create innovative programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to compile, prepare, write, and review reports.
  • Experience working in a multicultural educational environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high-pressure environment and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of staff and the surrounding community.
Must be fingerprinted and pass a background check. Must continue to meet the established standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Recreation, Student Development or related field.
  • Extensive progressively responsible experience working in a college or university recreation environment, such as large student recreation centers, student unions, student activities, residence life, or student development.
  • Experience managing rock climbing programs including; route setting, climbing gear, and safety requirements.
  • Experience in a large, non-profit corporation.
Involvement in professional societies and organizations.

Physical Requirements

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office and recreation center environment; continuous contact with staff, frequent contact with the campus community and the public.

The University Union facility, totaling approximately 220,000 square feet, currently houses food service operations, retail operations, multiple meeting and conference spaces, Associated Students, Inc., Student Organizations and Leadership offices, Women’s Resource Center, PRIDE Center, KSSU Student Radio, Public Information Desk, Games Room, Union Gallery, Terminal Lounge (music/video digital media), Student Computer Lounge, Meditation Room, computer and printer workstations throughout the building, a University Police Service Center, and various open lounge spaces. The WELL, totaling approximately 165,000 square feet, houses five fitness studios, a cardio suite, two fitness floors, a multi-activity court, four basketball courts, a rock climbing wall, four racquetball courts, an indoor running track, locker rooms, and conference center. The WELL is also home to Student Health and Counseling Services. The facilities provide services to over 31,000 students, as well as faculty and staff on campus.
