Job Summary

The Diversity Engagement Center strives to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students. The Assistant Director's overall responsibility is to support and contribute to the mission of the Diversity Engagement Center through programmatic efforts, support, and training of student workers and clubs, and by contributing to the development of a vibrant and caring community where intercultural dialogue, education, and cultural exploration can occur. This role establishes and maintains an active, highly visible, and deeply engaged presence to sustain and grow strong collaborative relationships with students, University faculty, staff, and New Orleans community members. The position specifically supports initiatives and programs aimed at diversity, equity, inclusion, and community engagement. As a core value of the Center, we frame our work in restorative practices, focusing on community engagement and creating inclusive environments where we acknowledge harm and work to repair it within the community.
Job Description

70% Programmatic Support

  • Leads, coordinates, and/or provides organizational support for inclusion and diversity initiatives for students
  • Plans, promotes and coordinates inclusion and diversity events for the Diversity Engagement Center
  • Create collaborative programs pertaining to multicultural students, intersectionality, and issues impacting historically marginalized communities locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Attend and be visible and present in events and programs on campus that are relevant to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Intersectional work
  • Manage and oversee outreach and publicity of the Diversity Engagement Center
  • Develop a semi-annual Master Calendar of Events and other signature activities at the beginning of each semester
  • Work collaboratively with Student Affairs in supporting the Reginald F. Lewis Scholars
  • Work collaboratively with Student Affairs in supporting the Multicultural Leadership Institute
  • Work collaboratively with Student Affairs to develop and implement a Multicultural Mentoring Program


15% Evaluation and Implementation
  • Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to assess potential barriers and develop strategies to promote a culture of inclusion and belonging where individuals from all racial and ethnic identities, ages, nationalities, social and economic statuses, sexual orientations, gender identity/expression, religious, political, ideological perspectives, and physical and mental abilities can thrive.
  • Work collaboratively with key University stakeholders to facilitate the successful retention, academic success, and timely graduation of UNO students, especially those from historically marginalized communities.
  • Assist the Dean of Students in budget management, reporting, communications, assessment, and other administrative tasks as needed.


10% Student Support
  • Be open to serving as an advisor to student organizations
  • Provide referrals, guidance, and intervention for students who may be experiencing bias, difficulty negotiating institutional processes or marginalization due to cultural differences; work in concert with relevant student services and advocate as needed
  • Serves as the contact for individual students or student organizations, fostering a strong connection and partnership between these students/groups and Student Affairs.


5% other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Ethnic Studies, Communications, Education, Organizational leadership, Higher Education, Social Justice, Sociology, or a related field and three or more years of related experience developing and implementing retention initiatives for diverse student populations, program management/development, evaluation, and advising students - OR - Masters degree and at least one year of experience developing and implementing retention initiatives for diverse student populations, program management/development, evaluation, and advising students
  • Experience working in higher education, with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, social justice, and equity initiatives
  • Strong knowledge of equity, historical and contemporary social disparities, multicultural education theoretical models, and effective co-curricular educational practices
  • Proven ability to develop programs and coordinate resources at the college level


Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Ethnic Studies, Communications, Education, Organizational leadership, Higher Education, Social Justice, Sociology, or a related field and two years or more of related experience
