The Financial Mathematics Program (FinMath) is a professional graduate program within the Department of Mathematics at The University of Chicago. Job Summary

The Assistant Director works with the Career Development Office (CDO) team to coach and prepare graduate students in the Financial Mathematics Program (FinMath) for securing internships and full-time employment. In addition to providing one-on-one and group advising support for students, the AD creates and facilitates innovative career management programming including classroom and virtual workshops, practice labs, special events and panels. This role also supports special event planning in support of alumni and employer relations as well as the Stevanovich Center for Financial Mathematics.

Responsibilities
  • Coach and advise students - Topics include career exploration within the quant finance field, job search strategies, resumes and cover letters, networking and professional development, interview skills, salary negotiation, etc.
  • Design and conduct career preparatory workshops and events around career development topics, as influenced by student feedback and strategizing with the CDO team.
  • Support the career management database, FinMath Connect (Symplicity). This includes entering counseling notes, generating reports, listing events, posting job/internship opportunities, and training/assisting students in using the system.
  • Complete data tracking and reporting, including CDO tools outside of FinMath Connect, including alumni, employer engagement, and interview question databases.
  • Provide planning and logistical support for alumni and employer events, as well as the Stevanovich Center industry events, including the Market Microstructure, Quantitative Trading, High Frequency and Large Data annual conference.
  • Identify and track opportunities for corporate engagement through Stevanovich Center industry events and work closely with CDO Associate Director to facilitate outreach.
  • Collaborate to deliver and manage programming and track student performance for CDO summer course modules, September Launch, and Career Seminar (FINM 38500).
  • Communicate and distribute information about job and career opportunities to students and alumni.
  • Coordinate CDO efforts with staff within the program and University as appropriate, (FinMath Student & Faculty Services, Office of International Affairs, UChicago GRAD, etc.).
  • Lead or participate in special projects as assigned by CDO Director.
  • Advises and counsels students concerning employment opportunities and careers by acting as a liaison between students and prospective employers.
  • Conducts mock interviews, reviews resumes and cover letters, and coordinates other interview related programming in both individual and group settings.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree.


Experience:
  • Career Services, Student Affairs, Advising or a related field.
  • Experience with graduate-level and/or international students.
  • Previous event planning experience.


Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Proficiency in office software such as Microsoft Office, Google Docs, etc.
  • Experience with client management software such as Symplicity, Salesforce, Handshake, etc.

  • Organizational skills and ability to multi-task on frequent and changing demands while meeting deadlines.
