Job Description:

An Apprentice Lineman will be responsible for performing a wide variety of work involving, among other things, both distribution system operations and maintenance. The Apprentice Lineman will assist the line crews with the construction, maintenance, and repair to overhead and underground distribution and transmission systems. The Apprentice Lineman must be self-motivated, work well with others, and possess a positive attitude and commitment to work safely, provide quality customer service, and create customer satisfaction and work productively.

General Requirements:

  • Report to and assist immediate supervisor.
  • Perform quality work as determined by project specifications.
  • Accountable for all tools and materials at the end of your shift.
  • Must work well as part of a team.

Functional Requirements:

  • Maintenance - Maintenance tasks typically include the routine inspection, modification, installation, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment and facilities.
  • Construction Methods - Climbing techniques and procedures; care and inspection of transmission structure hardware, tools, gear, and a variety of equipment (e.g., vehicles, bucket trucks, etc.) Perform a variety of tasks that typically involve the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of high voltage power system electrical equipment.
  • Skills - Digging procedures, guying of pole structures, right-of-way maintenance procedures, rigging and handling of conductor, conductor splicing, steel tower erection, and other work techniques.
  • Other – Serves as backup to other positions at the direction of management; and other duties as assigned.
  • Some contact with others, including organization personnel and general public. Purpose of contact is to provide or obtain explanation or interpretation of information.
  • Requires normal courteous interaction and basic interpersonal skills and tact to communicate with others. Non-routine inquiries and/or complaints are referred to others. Other limited external contact may be required to obtain information and/or to make inquiries of others.
  • Problems generally involve the selection of choices from standard procedures, organizing work and checking results. Answers are usually found from selecting from standard choices determined by work policies or procedures.
  • Some independent judgment is necessary to select and apply the most appropriate solution, with frequent discussion/contact with a supervisor. Makes recommendations to work procedures, policies and practices.

Qualification Standards:

  • Minimum one year degree in electrical construction.
  • 2 years electrical construction experience preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a Valid Class A Driver’s License.
  • Valid DOT Health Card.
  • Post-offer drug/alcohol screen and physical evaluation.
  • New Hire Orientation Quiz
  • Applicant/employee must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of such individual or others in the workplace.
  • Job site safety requirements as required by the client (clean shaven, long sleeves, steel toe boots, etc.).
  • Safety equipment as required by the client (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, respirator, hearing protection, safety harness with lanyard, etc.).
  • Fostering Teamwork – As a team member, the ability and desire to work cooperatively with others on a team; as a team leader, interest, skill and success in getting groups to learn to work together cooperatively.
  • Attention to Communication – Ensuring that information is passed on to others who should be kept informed.

  • Initiative – Identifying what needs to be done and doing it before being asked to or required by the situation.

  • Thoroughness – Ensuring that one’s own and other’s work and information are complete and accurate; careful preparation for meetings and presentations; following up with others to ensure that agreements and commitments have been fulfilled.
  • Flexibility – Openness to different and new ways of doing things; willingness to modify one’s preferred way of doing things.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must comply with company’s drug and alcohol abuse policy.
  • Must be able to pass physical examination, pre-employment if necessary, and as required by the company.
  • Grasp and manipulate various hand tools daily.
  • Standing for more than two hours at a time, as well twisting, bending, pulling, pushing, reaching, and stooping regularly.
  • Identify/distinguish colors and use of manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
  • Communicate orally as well as ability to hear and understand.
  • Work and operate motorized equipment as well as safely perform procedures where carelessness would potentially result in injury.
  • Work in an environment that is uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation or similar discomforts.
  • Ability to proofread and check documents for accuracy, as well as use a keyboard to enter and transform words or data.
  • Able to climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding, stairways, etc.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces (towers, vessels, excavations, etc.).
  • Able to carry 50 lbs. of tool and/or materials. It is recommended to get assistance to lift items over 50 lbs.  Check with your project supervisor or project safety director.
  • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work extended hours on your feet on uneven surfaces (dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.)
  • Must be clean shaven and able to work while wearing a respirator and other personal protective equipment, when required.

Work Environment:

  • Location: industrial construction sites and/or fabrication shop
  • Mobility Barriers to Access Job Site:
    • Uneven ground level
    • Obstructed pathways
    • Work performed at low and/or high elevations
    • Work performed in confined areas
  • Climatic/Environmental Conditions at Job Site:
    • Predominately outdoor climate
    • May be exposed to extreme hot or cold weather
    • Excessive humidity, rain, etc.
    • Various noise levels caused by tools, machinery, equipment, etc.
    • Potential exposure to chemical substances
