AP088 Scientific Software Developer - Fermi Science Support Center
We are seeking a highly skilled Scientific Software Developer to join the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope team at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. The successful candidate will join the Fermi Science Support Center (FSSC) as part of a small team focusing on a cloud computing initiative with the goal of allowing scientists to analyze Fermi data remotely and improving Fermi analysis workflows with open-source software tools. The applicant will be expected to give input into the design of the system and do much of the development work required. They should be able to work independently on projects as well as in collaboration with other FSSC staff.
The position also requires flexibility to adapt to new technologies as cloud computing efforts are still in their initial stages NASA-wide. A strong background in physical science and a broad interest in the scientific objectives of the Fermi mission and/or high-energy astrophysics in general is a plus.
The position is hybrid in-person. Occasional travel will be required.
Required:
- B.S. in Astronomy, Physical Sciences, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
- Experience developing Scientific Analysis Software with Python and C++.
- Experience with Linux or Unix operating systems and environments.
- Comfort working on the command line and with Bash (or other shells).
- Version control experience using git with Gitlab or Github.
- US Citizenship or Permanent Residency required for this position.
Desired:
- Experience with Astronomical data formats (e.g. FITS).
- Experience with the HEASARC FTOOLS.
- Experience with Astropy, Numpy, Conda, and other open-source python tools.
- Cloud or Web project experience with modern Back End technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, AWS.
- Web development experience with Front End technologies like HTML & CSS.
- Database interaction experience and knowledge of SQL.
- Creating and managing open Web APIs.
- History of contributing to and fostering open-source software communities.
- Knowledge of other languages such as C, Java, or Julia.
