Job Summary:

The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. One of 15 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, a brain imaging center, and a clinical biomanufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early stage human clinical trials. In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.

The Rodent Models Core at the Waisman Center is essential to the success of research that uses rodent models for the study of normal and abnormal development and degeneration of the nervous system. The core provides technical support, access to sophisticated behavioral equipment for mice and rats that can be shared among several investigators, and expertise in the behavioral phenotyping of mouse and rat models of intellectual and developmental disabilities and related disorders of the central nervous system. It operates within the Waisman Animal Facility, which is responsible for the care, feeding and record- keeping related to the use of mice and rats on biomedical research projects and the maintenance of specific rodent models of development, developmental disabilities and neurodegenerative diseases.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have the following required experience:
- Knowledge of basic animal care.
- Ability to read and understand various animal care protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Ability to accurately record data such as daily animal health observations, environmental conditions, and daily maintenance logs.
- The ability to learn safety rules and precautions necessary to maintain animal health and to avoid contracting diseases which may be communicated from the animals.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.

Well-qualified candidates will have the following preferred experience:
- At least one-year experience with responsible care and use of animals in a research setting.
- Familiarity with responsible care and use of animals in a research setting.
- Knowledge of acceptable animal husbandry practices and procedures.
- American Association for laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level.

License/Certification:

Preferred
AALAS - American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Technician Certification
American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Technician Certification is preferred

Work Schedule:

7:45 am to 4:30 pm (30 minute unpaid break) Monday through Friday; rotating weekend and legal holiday schedule.

Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 60% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Occasional evening work may be required. A rotating weekend and legal holiday schedule is required.

A Criminal Background Check will be performed.

Must complete HIPAA training and receive certification within the first 5 days of employment and annually thereafter within 5 days of notification.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and be able to stand on feet for long periods of time. This position requires frequent bending, twisting, and reaching.
