Job Purpose

The Analytical Chemist is responsible for undertaking the lab testing activities in a fast-paced environment by performing routine and in depth analytical, physical, & environmental specification testing and / or forensic testing of coatings and substrates. In this position you will need to understand both performance requirements and the analytical needs for various coatings systems and the substrates on which they are applied. To be successful in this role you will actively engage with various functional stakeholders and constructively interacts with all other U.S. and worldwide personnel to facilitate a well-run organization.

Key Responsibilities
• Apply scientific principles to perform routine analysis and characterization of samples.
• Provide immediate, active direct support for production and customer problems, in order to rapidly identify root cause and implement permanent corrective action.
• Provide guidance and training on test methods and control of equipment to customers and AkzoNobel personnel locally, regionally, and globally.
• Write and communicate new analytical and quality methods, using a high level of statistical rigor to validate the quality of the methods.
• Write and supervise execution of designed experiments, including data analysis and interpretation, to support product development, quality, manufacturing, and technical service
• Participate in external trade groups as the AkzoNobel representative to establish and standardize new test procedures and methodologies.
• Interpret testing standards from variety of sources and develop internal procedures to test according to the standards.
• Maintain current awareness of and continually work to make significant extensions to existing technology within areas of expertise, including equipment modification / design / calibration / maintenance / procedures / measurement / reporting in order to maximize efficiencies.
• Plan, co-ordinate and oversee regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on all testing instrumentation, including capital planning for replacement.
• Independently purchase necessary laboratory supplies including ordering parts, equipment and chemicals as needed to keep the facility and equipment operational and in original form.
• Identifies Akzo Nobel Intellectual Property and takes action to protect it.
• Promote the quality system through adhering to the elements of and being familiar with the philosophy, quality statement, quality manual, and procedures.
• Promote health, safety and environmental regulations by ensuring that standards, policies, and procedures are adhered to in compliance with corporate, federal, state, and local requirements.
• Perform other duties as required for the success of Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc.

Job Requirements
• Advanced degree (M.S. and/or Ph.D.) in chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer/materials science or analytical or testing sciences with some industrial experience or a B.S. science degree with 5 or more years experience in coatings science and technology or analytical or testing sciences.
• Must have worked in a testing environment with some leadership or acted as a lead person on testing projects/programs.
• Must be able to write quality customer reports and present information to colleagues and customers.
• Must have the ability to effectively organize and execute technical programs with a potentially high degree of complexity or unknowns to a successful conclusion.
• Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and/or multiple tasks efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience working within multi-cultural and international environment.
• Must be able and willing to travel.

Level of Autonomy
• Building and managing relationships with functional stakeholders within R&D, Commercial, Marketing, and Supply Chain.
• Manages the prioritization of the workload via predefined processes in accordance with business needs.
