What you do:

Allianz Life's multi-asset class general account portfolio supports the various North American insurance and retirement businesses. This role is responsible for managing the private investment strategies within the $100B buy and hold fixed income credit oriented assets of the general account. The portfolio strategy is an outsourced, top down, liability driven strategy with a primary focus on investment yield. The portfolio manager will steer the $40 billion private assets portion of the portfolio including CMLs, RML's, syndicated private placements, securitized investments and direct private investments incorporating collective market and sector views. The VP, Senior Portfolio Manager will work with both affiliated and unaffiliated asset managers to determine asset allocation, set investment standards, approve various transactions and monitor the portfolio vs the investment guidelines. Day-to-day investment decisions include determining if proposed investments deliver optimal investment income taking into account portfolio goals, capital efficiency, credit profile, accounting, company and regulatory rules. The portfolio manager will partner with outsourced asset managers as well as Allianz local and global teams in investments, legal, accounting, risk, actuarial and distribution to implement the investment strategy. The VP, Senior Portfolio Manager will also help evaluate new asset managers and new investment proposals as necessary.

As a senior member of the AIM investment team, the role will work closely with the Head of Portfolio Management and other section heads to implement the strategy. PM will need to stay in tune with market conditions including changes in value arising from interest rates, credit quality and liquidity premiums in both traditional and non-traditional credit assets as well as the effects on liabilities and capital.

The PM will join a team of investment professionals that have a history of sustained superior performance across a broad platform of asset classes, and must therefore possess superior management and leadership skills in addition to having a well-developed technical skills. The successful candidate will be able to advocate for the company's investment and risk management policies to senior management and employ a long term investment horizon.

  • Oversee Life Insurance Company private fixed Income investment strategy ($40+B) within the $100+ billion life insurance general account
  • Lead role in investment discussions around private credit investments, capital efficiency, risk management, analytics, market trends and innovation
  • Set implementable guidelines for asset managers for private asset classes taking into account overall portfolio strategy
  • Steer outsourced asset managers implementation of guidelines including use of leeways based on current market conditions and overall portfolio needs
  • Embrace the challenge of optimizing investment performance within a large-scale, global investing context where by significant consideration must be given to cross-border, regulatory issues, tax, legal, accounting, compliance, ALM and enterprise risk.
  • Enhance the investment monitoring and performance measurement process working with capital markets and risk teams including analytics, peer analyses, risk management models and exposure monitoring
  • Work with local and global coworkers to enhance Allianz's overall knowledge of asset classes and market opportunities


What you bring:
  • Minimum of 10+ years of investment experience, preferably in the multi-national insurance industry
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing a portfolio of private fixed income assets and CMLs
  • Strong knowledge of insurance capital models and NAIC investment regulations preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Strong analytical skills including using portfolio investment systems, data manipulation and ad hoc analysis.
  • Strong relationship/client management skills.
  • Strong project management and process development skills, coupled with the ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • CFA preferred.
