Schedule: M-F 11 AM - 7 PM September-June, hours will shift to 9-5 during the summer and on professional development days.

Harlem Grown operates soil-based urban farms, school gardens, and a hydroponic greenhouse. Our offices and properties are located between 122 and 152 Streets in Central and East Harlem, Manhattan.
Our Programs
Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability through the lens of racial justice, food justice, social justice, and equity. Our youth focused programs include intensive school partnerships, educational farm tours, a summer camp, a Saturday enrichment program, and an afterschool program, including our mobile teaching kitchen. Our community development programs include wellness workshops, special events, food scrap collection for composting, and fresh farm produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents.
Job Overview
This position oversees Harlem Grown's afterschool program at Riverton Square, a residential complex in Harlem, and is the lead staff member on-site for teaching daily programming. In leading the afterschool program, this position will develop and teach hands-on lessons both in the classroom and in the garden for grades 1 through 8 that meet Harlem Grown's learning objectives, as well as align with Next Generation Science Standards. Activities include STEAM based learning, cooking lessons, gardening, and homework help.
This position directly manages a full-time educator, who co-teaches programming. Additionally, the Coordinator is responsible for all administrative work in running the afterschool program including, but not limited to student recruitment and registration, parent/caregiver communication, classroom upkeep, ordering supplies, and coordinating with the Riverton residential complex. This position will also be responsible for coordinating with our agriculture team to maintain the on-site garden and engage youth participants in garden tasks. In the summer, this position assists with Harlem Grown's Summer Camp providing both administrative and programmatic support.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Program Manager and other HG staff to manage and implement Harlem Grown's afterschool program at Riverton, including leading hands-on farm education, cooking classes, and other educational activities
- Plan, manage, and run all aspects of Harlem Grown's afterschool program at Riverton Square, including but not limited to hiring, scheduling, and managing support staff (including educators and interns), writing and delivering age-appropriate curricula, creating schedules and program themes, supervising all children enrolled in the program (and ensuring all students have completed the necessary paperwork to enroll), working with program families, ordering supplies, and student recruitment and retention.
- Coordinate both with Riverton housing complex's staff and Harlem Grown's agriculture team to ensure smooth operations of both classroom facilities and the onsite garden.
- Assist in coordinating community and family events, as well as marketing/outreach efforts, which may include tabling, open houses, and promotional events
- Ensure that the afterschool program is in line with Harlem Grown's mission and goals and aligns with all other public programs, and communicate closely with the Program Manager to work towards these ends
- Serve as support staff for Harlem Grown's Summer Camp in June, July, and August
- Provide coverage and assistance for Harlem Grown's other public programs and projects as needed, including participating in Harlem Grown's signature Saturday community events which require all staff participation approximately four times a year.
- Work as a team member to support Harlem Grown initiatives and programs
- Serve as a role model for youth and reinforce Harlem Grown's values of honesty, respect, and responsibility
- Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in education, public programming and/or youth development, with effective classroom management skills
- Experience managing afterschool programs
- Demonstrated experience writing curricula, especially in afterschool settings
- Experience supervising staff in youth programming
- Strong communication and public presentation skills in the context of working with children
- Must be high-energy and enthusiastic in working with children and families
- Very strong organizational, planning, and leadership skills, with the ability to work independently and as a team
- Proficiency in computer skills and Microsoft suite, including SharePoint and OneDrive
- Degree in education or related field
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of food systems, agriculture, nutrition, urban farming and/or gardening
- Spanish language fluency a plus
- Strong connection to the Harlem community
Salary Range: $48,000-$54,000
