Adjunct Faculty Pool, American Sign Language

Columbia College Chicago is an urban institution of some 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students that offers a rigorous education in the creative and media arts with a foundation in the liberal arts. In addition to its regular, full-time faculty, Columbia College Chicago hires scholars, creative professionals and other industry-experienced Adjunct Faculty to teach courses on a part-time basis. These positions are not available every semester and are contingent upon student enrollment and the availability of funding.
To be qualified to teach at the college, candidates must possess a terminal degree in the relevant discipline -or at least one degree above the level at which they teach. In terminal degree programs, faculty members will possess the same level of degree. In extraordinary cases, a history of distinguished professional work, compelling creative achievements, or other significant experience in the relevant field may be considered as an alternative to the required degree.
The American Sign Language Department at Columbia College Chicago is seeking an American Sign Language Instructor to fill an Adjunct faculty position. Duties and responsibilities include teaching a full-range of college courses in American Sign Language, during day or night, which may range from ASL I, II, III, IV, and Advanced ASL and include elements of Deaf Culture.
The American Sign Language Department offers a major in ASL-English Interpretation, a major in Deaf Studies, and a minor in ASL Studies. Our curriculum emphasizes work with the Deaf population as a linguistic and cultural minority. Our ASL-English Interpretation program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education.
The minimum qualifications for this position include a Master's degree and two years of appropriate professional experience, and demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of college students.
