911 POLICE/FIRE COMMUNICATION TECHNICIAN

The Charter Township of Shelby is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for the position of 911 Police/ Fire Communication Technician.

DESCRIPTION AND QUALIFICATIONS

This is a communications position that requires extensive multi-tasking capabilities and the comm-tech must be able to maintain effective delivery of services under highly stressful working conditions. It involves receiving and transmitting radio-communications over multiple police and fire radio frequencies. Also, receiving telephone calls for police and fire service from township residents and making independent judgments on the action to be taken, based on the information collected in those calls.

Supervision Received: Work is performed in accordance with established department rules and regulations under the direct supervision of patrol shift lieutenant and patrol sergeant.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties and Functions: The 911 communication technician may be called upon to do any or all of the following (these examples do not include all of the tasks which employees may be expected to perform):

  1. Receive incoming calls from the public requesting police, fire, and/or emergency medical services
  2. Assist police/fire units in the field by securing and verifying call information through computers.
  3. Classify the nature of calls; determine the priority of calls; determine the appropriate emergency service agency to handle calls, and dispatch the necessary information to the proper agency.
  4. Assist police and fire units in the field by securing and verifying information through computers and radio transmissions.
  5. Obtain and coordinate the assistance of police, fire, medical, wrecker, utility, public works department, and other agencies, as necessary.
  6. Record and maintain information in manual and automated record systems.
  7. Operate radio consoles, recorders, E-911 displays, computer-aided dispatching terminals, L.E.I.N. and N.C.I.C. computer systems, and other equipment.
  8. Assist in the training of new dispatchers as assigned.
  9. Transmit, receive, and relay local and county/state radio and telephone messages to alert or coordinate the activities of the police and fire of the appropriate agencies involved.
  10. Transmit radio messages to patrol areas for necessary coverage of emergency accidents, orders, and dispatches.
  11. Routes patrol, fire, and EMS units to emergencies..
  12. Initiate, receive, and relay L.E.I.N. broadcasts and administrative messages, as needed.
  13. Keep daily automated and manual case logs and other records that are pertinent to the communications division.
  14. Utilize various computer applications and software programs.
  15. Perform other related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  1. Ability to maintain and prepare comprehensive and detailed reports.
  2. Ability to work effectively with other personnel and the general public.
  3. Ability to answer calls and questions with a well-modulated and pleasant voice.
  4. Thorough knowledge of police and fire methods and practices.
  5. Thorough knowledge of police department rules and regulations.
  6. Thorough knowledge of geography, streets, and important locations in the township.
  7. Ability to write and speak effectively.
  8. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  9. Ability to multitask.
  10. Ability to deal with the public firmly and courteously and to establish effective working relations with the public.

PRELIMINARY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be a citizen of the U.S. or have legal authorization to work in the United States at the time of application.
  2. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age or older at the time of application.
  3. Must not have been convicted of a violation of criminal law. (Criminal law generally includes all offenses except traffic law, conservation law, and liquor law). A violation of criminal law is cause for automatic disqualification.
  4. Graduation from an accredited High School or GED equivalent.
  5. Must pass a written and oral examination with a minimum score of seventy (70%) percent on each.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. Vision must be free of significant abnormality, correctable to 20/20, and have normal color vision.
  2. Must pass a complete physical examination, including drug testing; a psychological examination; and a background investigation prior to hire, in accordance with the rules of the Commission.
  3. Must meet the driving record requirements of the Charter Township of Shelby Police and Fire Civil Service Commission.

$5,000 Bonus after passing probation!

Must complete two years of service with the Township.
